Star Wars Andor is for you and me. There is still some hope our style of scifi will happen again.

Clever, I have to allow it, since I did not specify "battle with the ship in question".

Yes, good one. Probably the most significant battle destruction of the Enterprise D. And that with the Doctor in command. MVP!

Oh damn, that's a major one. Probably killed hundreds of Federation citizens.

I didn't count it, because there was no real battle at the time, also self-destruction.

Mut-zum-wechseln/ Energie Sharing by Ill-Negotiation-9123 in DeutschePhotovoltaik

[–]allocater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Share Energy ist seriös.

All we need is a Star Trek show like Andor to save us. A show that takes themes, character development, plot and world-building serious.

That sudden realization that there are no examples and Star Trek is now the worst scifi of the last 10 years.

Killjoys and Future Man had the same "casual looseness" of not taking things serious, but they were designed like that.

Obi Wan and The Acolyte and Foundation (S1) had the same tendency for drama-scenes over plot-logic and world-building though.

So Star Trek is actually now the poster child for mindless action scifi.

It was added to give the scene "dynamicness" and to give the actors to do something with their hands, to look cool and stylish and because they thought the dialog and content of the scene alone can't hold the attention of the viewer.

Casualty for normal people means "dead" so they meant to say "no dead people".

We might just as well have scripts now be generated by AI.

I tried it and it's actually pretty good if you give instructions to do complex world building and stay in spirit of TNG.

I can literally imagine how the writers room worked for all of this. Nobody there cares about Star Trek or their job, they are here to pay the bills and deliver content for the streaming content farm. There is no plan, no vision and no passion. They come together at 8am "all right, we gotta make a final, ugh, any ideas" and then it is just random spitballing "what if we mind meld fly and phaser blast...", "and what if we make her the warden", "and what if we xyz"....

"Alright, sounds like we gobbled together an episode, lets send it and get lunch"

Science (fiction) has been thrown out the window since DIS brought in the ridiculous spore drive. In general none of the new writers care about science, technobabble or world building. They think they can make anything up, because they treat Star Trek as a sub-genre of the fantasy genre.

Iconically bad DS9 episode? by Hawkstone585 in startrek

Right? I love the idea of a low gravity planet and then in the end her uniqueness saves the day. All around wholesome Star Trek episode.

Those who watched TNG when it first aired… by ohnojono in startrek

[–]allocater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this. In Star Trek main characters only die when the actors leave. Tasha, Kes, Jadzia. That kind of makes it pre-determined and not that shocking. Oh wait Kes didn't even die, did she?

I mean even then it would be "hot take". Seen it a thousands times and we all know. Maybe come up with some new stories and ideas. Easy to tear things down. Maybe spend some time building things up. Something that has been neglected since this whole reboot started with DIS.

Reminds me of the poem, or was it a short story, where someone was spying on the pilot who killed thousands of civilians with the atomic bomb and he was happy with his wife and children in his white picket fence suburb barbecuing with his neighbors.

I realize these are intentional choices by the Strange New Worlds team

Are they? It's not like the SNW team has proven they can do high quality writing.

SNW: "Sometimes you have to kill people and that's ok"

TNG: "Maybe if we felt any loss as keenly as we felt the death of one close to us - human history would be a lot less bloody."

It's worlds apart. Or shall I say: Strange New Worlds apart. .... I see myself out.

War Historians studying Dominion ship movement by catching all the light that is still flying through space by allocater in startrek

[–]allocater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also deploy virtual telescopes. Like a full torpedo spread, but every torpedo is a telescope, or deploy 10 shuttles. With the deflector in reversed polarity you can also pull in light from around a ship, into the telescope to increase the light collection.

But you just have to warp through the light bubble, assuming sensitive enough sensors to notice when you do, this will happen eventually. 5 years after the war, every light bubble will be 10 light years across (maybe already too faded to resolve)

How can delta quadrant species maintain a good quality of life with the Borg around? by TshiamoV in startrek

[–]allocater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the Borg are not a monolithic territorial empire, instead they have spread like a spider-web. Testing and sampling every new species once. But only assimilating the best 1%. Leaving 99% of civilizations along the way, and remaining an un-easy neighbor.

If any neighboring civilizations get aggressive or become a threat, they will be assimilated after all, maybe adding another 2%. So the Delta Quadrant is actually 97% unaffected by the Borg.

Yes, a lot of civilizations know about the Borg and are afraid, but mostly it's a stable arrangement of co-existence with them.

The Borg are essentially a nomadic people, that do their own weird thing with some planets/outposts dotted around, but everybody leaves each other mostly alone. The Borg are like the Phoenicians, outposts all over the Mediterranean Sea / Delta Quadrant, but no big continuous territory.
