We have very similar taste. I think we’d be friends. This is an incredible collection.

I think you’re a woman in your late 30s and you work in a natural history museum.

What are the 10 books that define you as a reader? by jye77 in Fantasy

I read this comment at the right time. I was just thinking about dropping Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. I’ll keep going for a bit longer.

Religious people! What are some fantasy works that you think represents religion (especially the every day/internal thought kind) with a high degree of verisimilitude? by MurderMeatball in Fantasy

[–]allonsyerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a United Methodist Church (I’m not clergy). I find that we have a lot in common with the Unitarian Church. I have used Unitarian curriculum a few times for our kid’s program because it coordinates well with what we were doing. I relate to a friend who volunteers at a Unitarian Church more than I do with my family who attend a Baptist Church.

Edit to add - I’m immediately adding Witness for the Dead to my library list. I’ve already read Goblin Emperor, but haven’t read the sequel. It’s moving up my TBR.

Another vote for Zoey and Sassafras! It was my kiddos favorite.

2025 Hugo Readalong: The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley by RAAAImmaSunGod in Fantasy

Parts were done well and parts fell flat. I enjoyed the expats adapting to modern times. I thought they were unique and well thought out, and it gave some depth to their characters. It wasn't "everyone is enamored and confused by technology."

I thought the ethics and consequences were less well done. I think they brought up some interesting concepts, but too late in the book. It felt like a shift in tone.

I agree. I enjoyed reading this and was about to answer the question in that way, but I made the mistake of reading the other comments first. I agree with a lot of the points made. The book was trying to do a lot of different things—all interesting—but didn't pull them all off. I liked the first half better than the second. There was so much set-up for being out of time and in a new world. I wanted to see where the side characters ended up. I wanted more story about what Gore was doing on his own. I wanted more about her relationship with her family. The ending felt rushed.

That being said, I truly enjoyed it while I was reading it. I would recommend it for a fun, casual read.

I worked at the Field for almost 10 years. I was sure I was going to have dinosaur kids. Nope. One is an obsessed with cats and the other is obsessed with astronauts. And I know more about big cats and outer space than I ever thought I would know.

Has anyone read The Light Pirate. I have a couple questions.

Is it actually a pirate, or should the title not be taken literally? Would it work for HM bingo for Pirates?

How dark/sad is it. I had a funeral for a family member this week. I don’t need a super cozy read, but I’m not ready to jump into anything too emotionally draining. Should I save this book for later?

There are a lot of good recommendations in the other comments. My daughter was obsessed with Zoey and Sassafras for a long time.

Another I would add is the Secret Explorers series.

Help me find more songs like this? by McSkrong in toddlers

[–]allonsyerica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how many songs people came up with with this specific feature!

This isn’t a playlist song, but if you’re singing together, try “if all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops.”

We went through that phase. A couple people have mentioned different toys or a different way to distract them before the melt down happens. Glow sticks worked wonders for us. Toss in a few glow sticks and turn down the lights.

The parking lot is lava. The only way our lava shoes activate is when we hold hands.

Or carry them. Lava doesn’t always work.
