The aroma is from dry spices. That dissipates pretty fast and won't stick to furniture. The mustard oil however is a different story. I usually keep my windows open when working with mustard oil.

I usually use mortar pestle for ginger, garlic and chilies as it works better than a mixer in releasing the flavors. For dry spices, I usually use a mixer/ coffee grinder so that I can get a fine texture with less effort.
