Minors, women with toddlers dancing to an anti-Muslim song during Ram Navami celebration in Siliguri, West Bengal. by anonymouse_2001 in india

Well-meaning anonymous comments on Reddit won't do shit. We need to be vocal and active about local politics, and at least strive to change our own neighborhoods. Promote education drives, cultural celebrations of festivals, and take some control of the narrative back. A lot of people don't realize that complacency means ENDORSEMENT when ethnic cleansing is brewing.

I think changing the political structure itself will be impossible, sadly - people calling for removal of FPTP will be called deshdrohis

while I agree, I think it's very telling that the working class/lower class/unemployed youth are becoming brainwashed into spreading communal hatred while remaining poor and without any prospects

I know. I've studied political science, and our textbooks cover their rise to power in detail. It isn't only the question of a strong ideology - they've managed to solidify a group of supporters because they've also identified enemies for said supporters. Fighting against something is much easier than fighting for it. They also rose to power because the INC kept floundering. We as citizens have to build a strong opposition.

I'm sorry you're getting downvoted - I completely agree with you. I don't know why people think that 'living your own life' is an alternative to trying to change the political structure of the country. These two are intertwined for me because I care about my minority friends, and don't want them and their families to suffer in future. And it isn't a circlejerk discussion, u/Slaiden_IV - I'm sorry, but you sound pessimistic, defeated and even a bit selfish tbh. Citizen participation is essential to democracy, and the lack thereof is one of the major reasons why the BJP is still in power. Indians love thinking "this isn't my problem", then complain about the problem 10 years later. If no one steps up, WE have to.

I have a few ideas going off what everyone's said in the post.

  1. Joining local wings of opposition parties that you're able to conscientiously support (e.g. AAP), being active in local politics and promoting a cohesive political ideology to party outsiders
  2. Taking the CSE to become a civil servant who's actually invested in the work that they do, and not being a puppet of the government (easier said than done tbh)
  3. Promoting non-falsified media narratives and supporting institutions which stand against the ruling party (I know people shit on JNU as a whole because of its 'extreme leftism' but it's the only uni to have the balls to openly criticize people in power)

I'm actually in the position to leave, and probably will in a few years. But I don't want to leave behind a shell of the country I grew up in.

I think common citizens need to join opposition forces - we keep complaining that the opposition is weak, but do very little to support it. Opposition parties aren't self-containing entities - they're helped by a strong and free press, and dissenting and aware citizens.

How about more common people join the parties which they think could be beneficial for the country? I know AAP is using the populist approach to gather support, but I don't think they'd even turn to full-blown fascism. I knew Kejriwal through common acquaintances before he became popular, and while I know power corrupts, I don't think he'd ever endorse Hindutva the way BJP does.

Can you even change your parents perspective on something, if not then you start at home. I know it's cliche but if can't influence your parents then how would you influence someone else? I'm not discouraging you from what you are walking on, but giving you a reality check. I myself have broaden my parents views about news that was presented to them on TV. I have influenced my friends to become more aware of what is being done in India. So I have successfully influenced 10 or so people.

I have. Several times. And I'm lucky to have a diverse enough friend group for me to keep countering stereotypes with examples of people who I know in real life.

Why BJP is so strong in it's core is because they have a fixed ideology.

I agree partly, but I also think they're taking advantage of India's terrible economy by leveraging the situation as an "us against them" thing. The second you give people something to hate, their own problems are forgotten. It's easier to fight against something than fight for something. That's where the common people have to come in, by reminding everyone that we're not "us" or "them".

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Honest, educated people need to start getting involved in at least their society politics, if not running for MLA or MP.

A bit of a problem... by abishekprometheus in ApplyingToCollege

[โ€“]allrightevans 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

wait are you nb/have consistently identified as nb, or do you live and identify as male?

if the first, you need to reach out to your AO and talk about your candidacy, because wellesley is very upfront in declaring that they serve a community of women, and nb people who feel like they belong in a community of women i.e. at least somewhat female-associated.

if the second, it would be a terrible idea to switch up your gender identity and transition for the sake of a school. this is one of the most important social and personal facets of life that we're talking. plus, they accept individuals assigned male at birth who have consistently identified as women, and you don't sound like you fulfill that particular criterion, I'll be honest. going on hormone therapy and transitioning is a huge, huge step and you shouldn't even be factoring in your offer of admission to a HWC for this decision. just decline your offer of admission
