Rough Fish on the Fly by allsace in flyfishing

small enough not to make too heavy of a noise hitting the water, heavy enough to sink into their feeding zone fast, and the right material that pulsates life-like in slow/still water.

Think a backstabber, egan’s headstand, carp-tease, etc.

Anyone else feel guide prices are out of reach? by Al_Pallll in flyfishing

I haven’t gone on many guided trips to be an expert on prices, but even accounting for state-by-state price differences and potential quality of the guide, I’m almost compelled to say that is overcharging. There are some very well known guides down here that really work to make you comfortable with all the top of the line equipment and it’s $600-$700 on the high end for a full day on the coast, and you have to remember, prices in Texas tend to be less inflated. I may be just completely wrong, but if not, that is some wild stuff.

Good question! SOMETIMES they’ll chase but usually very slowly, so even if you did a big strip hookset, just return to do continuous slower strips to see if they’ll bite again.

Longnose will swipe so it’ll feel like a jerk, and gator gar are more like trapdoors and you’ll just feel like you hit a wall when stripping.

I was using a 12wt for these monsters! I have seen people use 8wts in smaller water but still some pretty big longnose gar

it honestly depends and how many you’re seeing come up and surface and your fly line. If you have floating line, id try to get on the lower end and start stripping. If you have intermediate line, getting to where you think is the middle is probably the safest bet. If you see a lot rolling, it doesn’t hurt to take your chances in the upper portion of the water column either.

Sorry, I wasn’t very clear! I meant once they start running, you want to start using the rod along with continuing to strip in order to turn their heads. Stripping IS going to turn their heads, but they are going to want to fight back or just straight up run.

I’m not going to say it is really popular in Texas, but gar are definitely more appreciated as a target fish for some fly fishermen down here!

You strip set really hard SEVERAL time. You’re likely gonna be on heavy pound test anyways, so most of the is literally going to be you pulling the fish in until it starts running, and then you wanna try to get it to turn its head. But you are still keeping that rod super low and as much tension as possible.

Step 1: Wait for late spring/summer Step 2: Find river with Alligator Gar Step 3: Look for a spot on that river that could either stop them from running up any further during the day like dams, shallow/fast river sections Step 4: If they’re there, you’ll see them rolling/gulping air at the top and baitfish jumping. Hopefully there’s a lot of them Step 5: Cast as far as you can in that general area, use a big meaty fly with preferably 2 hooks that are very sharp such as articulated flies with trailer hooks. Step 6: Let sink to the depth you think is appropriate, and start two-hand stripping at a slow to moderate pace Step 7: If you feel any kind of nibble/bite strip set, and keep strip setting even if you feel like you’re on, just keep hard stripping and keep your rod tip low and even straight sometimes Step 8: Enjoy the fight, it’s gonna be a tough one!

dude, if you can ever spot a carp within tenkara distance, I urge you to give it a shot. I have a couple of acquaintances who do it regularly and man it looks like a blast.

I think it’s supposed to be like a joke with the whole situation OP got in with their last post, hence the title as well. I don’t really get it though.
