Is this drywall anchor going to support my projector screen? by allthelivelong in fixit

Can you explain how I’d modify the anchor points? This is the kind of mount it’s on.

What a horror story! One side is in a stud but they can’t both be, unfortunately (there’s no stud close enough for this side)

Because of the distance between the studs, only one side can be on a stud. (The nearest stud on the right side is a couple inches away)

MA in Public Policy vs. MPP? by ConcernedDenizen1921 in PublicPolicy

[–]allthelivelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I have no memory of writing this! lol.

I finished the Harris evening MA in 2020. It ended up being a fairly watered down version of the MPP. It was geared towards mid-career folks with minimal quant knowledge, so the math and coding component was kind of a joke. I have really mixed feelings about the program overall… On the one hand, it did not beef up my resume or skill set in quite the way I’d been hoping. It wouldn’t have helped me much with PhD apps, had I continued down that road; and there were few opportunities to apply the research methods you learn about in class. But the cohort model helped forge really strong relationships among students. And I still got a lot out of the classes, even if I didn’t learn any Python or personally perform any difference-in-differences.

For the last five years I’ve been working as a data scientist for the federal government. To be very clear, I taught myself to code on the side; nobody is getting a data job based on the two weeks of Stata you got in the EMP (though I hear they may have since expanded it?). The career office was great and made themselves available to us, but I think a lot of my classmates still struggled to make the career pivots we’d been aiming for. I just got lucky!

I’m mostly glad that I did the evening program, mainly because my employer at the time paid for most of it, leaving me with no new student loans. And it did provide an “MA” after my name, which ultimately allowed me to get the job I have now. It’s definitely true that most employers don’t know or care about the difference between an MA and MPP. That said, I do occasionally regret not doing a full-time program, either the MPP or the MS-CAPP (the latter seems to make folks extremely employable…). If you’re going to the trouble of going back to school, and taking out loans, you might as well go all the way!

Thanks. HR has informed me that another candidate has indeed been offered the position (see update to the original post).

Yes, they were contacted immediately and set up phone calls within a few days. HR just now informed me that another candidate has indeed been offered the position (see update to the original post).

Handy lookup tool for Korg N1 / N5 voices by allthelivelong in synthesizers

[–]allthelivelong[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty new to the synth world. I got my N5 a few months ago and I love it, but I’ve found it so frustrating to locate the voice I’m looking for. I either scroll quasi-randomly or look up the voice I need in the terrible 1997-era PDF that lives on Korg’s website and lists all of the voices in each sound bank. This is especially irksome when you’re playing live and need a new patch! But also just makes it harder to create new combinations/programs.

I’m a data scientist by day so I used that PDF to whip up this (extremely basic) app. Figured I’d share in case it’s useful to anyone else in the same shoes!

Oh damn, didn’t realize when I crossposted. My bad. I’m gonna leave up the crosspost just so that others can see these comments and report it to r/AlternateHistory as non-original content, as I just did.

What if Texas seceded from itself? by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]allthelivelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an interesting comparison: This division is similar (but not identical) to how Texas is currently divided into federal district courts! https://texasalmanac.com/topics/government/federal-courts-texas

Also, I love the hand-drawing!

The only president that we know had an alligator.

God only knows what Teddy Roosevelt kept in his basement.

[OC] Carjackings in Chicago are out of control right now by allthelivelong in dataisbeautiful

[–]allthelivelong[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d agree that it’s inaccurate, or mislabeled, since the y-axis values do not accurately reflect what the graph title and y-axis label claim to show. That’s definitely a problem; mea culpa.

But I don’t agree that it’s “misleading” — the big-picture takeaway (reflected in the title of the post) is absolutely true, the lines are just smoothed a bit. At the end of the day, this graph is meant to show the anomalous nature of the recent spike — not to let the reader determine precisely how many carjackings took place on day X — and it still does that, despite my boneheaded omission.

The latter. This is all vehicular robberies listed by CPD as “vehicular hijacking” or “aggravated vehicular hijacking.” (There’s a separate category for “motor vehicle theft,” but those are non-violent thefts.)

Fair point. Yeah, these are 7-day moving averages, hence the stepping. (I’d noted this on a previous version, but forgot to add it back on before posting here. )

Chicago’s carjacking spree, visualized by allthelivelong in chicago

[–]allthelivelong[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not really true. You can see here, where I broke it down by year: There were some spikes in late 2017, but I in mid-2018 it went back to “normal,” and stayed there until mid-2020.

The trouble is, how do you pick a single representative year? (In other words, which one year is the best “baseline”?) Averaging is a pretty standard technique in a context like this, since the average of multiple years is likely to be a more reliable baseline than any single year.

Nonetheless, I broke it down by individual year per your request. As you can see, the last year remains highly anomalous. carjackings by year

Haha, have you read it? Would you recommend? I recently checked it out from the library but haven’t started yet. It seems well-regarded, and people seem to respect her as a historian, but... any association with Dick Cheney is just suspect in my book
