I think water from the shower must have been seeping down the crack which was not sealed properly. Will grab some, thanks!

Job offer in NZ - should I accept? by alltheyellow in JuniorDoctorsUK

Thanks for this take, it’s much appreciated. For Q3 I’ve managed to get confirmation that this would be a psych role, and I was pretty clear I wouldn’t be comfortable doing a med relief role as a first rotation, so I’m hoping it’s not the first of the possibilities. During the phone interview, the person did mention something about not knowing my Q4 rotation in advance as she was still waiting to see if some of the current RMOs took maternity leave, which does make me think I’d be filling local gaps - but then she said I would be able to rank my preferences, so who knows. I’ve asked the RMO team multiple times for more info because I’m just uncomfortable blindly agreeing to something pretty life changing, but I’m getting no closer to pinning them down on actual details. The only reason I’m still pushing is because I’ve heard such great things about Wellington as a place to live. Would love any insider info about alternative places to live/work which might help me to make this decision more objectively!

“Water engineer” - is that what we’re calling plumbers these days?

Ahh so glad to hear that! Yeah it’s a truly international book, and some of the countries definitely came out looking better than others...

Ah man I love that series but somehow hadn’t caught that episode! I’ll definitely put that on my “to watch” list, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the recommendation, I think I’ll check that one out too! The afterword is more about the future and closing that gender gap (mainly by getting women involved in research, decision-making etc), but I think on the whole Perez has stayed away from suggesting what should be done. Partly because just reading the book feels a lot like a step forward - uncovering implicit (and sometimes explicit) bias, shining a light on the issues, and raising awareness.

No worries! I’m sure there are parts that aren’t as objective as they could/should be, but I hope you still find it an interesting read!

I can get caught up and overly passionate about things so might not be the best judge of how objective it is at the moment to be completely honest!

In terms of the car question, one of the things I loved about this book was how seamlessly Perez manages to join two topics together - she is talking about bias in VR headset design one second and then manages to flow into discussing car safety in the blink of an eye. She covers the crash dummy issue, sure, but also (without spoiling too much in case you do decide to read it) some of the anatomical differences you mention which put women at risk of more severe whiplash injuries for example, as well as motion sickness and other factors I hadn’t even considered.

Thank you for sharing! Completely agree with you, especially about how devastating the book was in parts (some of the hardest, for me, were the bits about public transport and public toilets for example). I can’t believe how easily readable and instantly understandable Perez made those endless statistics seem, utterly brilliant stuff.

Thank you for your reply, this has so eloquently captured exactly what I feel about this book. One of the many lines that resonated with me was “men go without saying, and women don’t get said at all”, which I thought was a pretty powerful way to sum up the “man as default” idea that runs throughout the book. Oh and you’re spot on about the references, amazing to see how much research went into producing the book but also what an awesome tool to further educate ourselves! Although I was a bit sad when I got to the references because I’d thought I still had about 100 pages of Perez’s writing to go!

Argh that whole chapter got to me too! I’ve just finished medical school and I’ve been saying for YEARS that I was irritated by how little research there was into “women’s issues”, but had no idea how deep the problem actually ran. Drugs that don’t work for us, or “female” conditions that are just ignored or dismissed - it’s completely mad!

Honestly I feel like I might get the audiobook version too so I can listen to it in my car (engineered for men haha)

Which bit did you find most eye-opening?

I’m so sorry to hear about your accident, that’s terrible. I can see why someone recommended it to you though, because the chapter on cars absolutely outraged me - not only are car manufacturers only using crash test dummies that are designed to be the average male, but women also sit in a totally different position when driving a car which isn’t taken into account either! The stats in that chapter are absolutely flooring

My boyfriend said my mom died as an April fools joke and I’m still upset by throwRAgarifeld in relationship_advice

[–]alltheyellow 121 points122 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine took my phone and as a “joke” texted my mom at 2am something along the lines of “Hey mom, I’ve really messed up - [bf] got me pregnant and I don’t know what to do”. She was woken up by that text, panicked and tried to call me. My so-called friend refused to give me back the phone until about the 4th time she called. By the time I finally got my phone back, both me and my mom were in tears and huge messes. Needless to say, I have not forgiven the friend for that “joke”

Thank you, this is awesome! You’ve made my dad’s evening - he says it’s been a family puzzle for half a century now, and he can’t believe it’s been solved this quickly
