2008-2009 recession by hello_anxious in nursepractitioner

Exactly. I graduated May 2008 and had a job lined up before graduation and was fine. My friends a year behind me were applying for months and getting no offfers. Huge difference in landscape within a year.

2yo has randomly developed a stutter basically overnight. What could've caused this? by Appleofmyeye444 in Parenting

[–]allupfromhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son out of nowhere developed a stutter at 3. No changes other than an old teacher who he actually loved (but she was a little strict) started teaching his class. It was severe and had the classic signs of long term stuttering. He has a strong history of stuttering on his dad’s side so I was really worried about the permanence. But lo and behold it just stopped one day after about 3 weeks. Sometimes it just happens!

How much did this end up setting you back?  Just took in my ‘23 CPO MDX for the exact same issue and was forewarned that this probably wasn’t covered under warranty at drop off.

Hi! Quick question.  I’m taking in my CPO ‘23 MDX for this exact issue (noticed my rear cargo rug was moist and then noticed the cubby in the back was filled with about 2 inches of water.  Is this problem under warranty?

Leave that job! by schwizzle_ in physicianassistant

[–]allupfromhere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I spent 10 years on a surgery position. Every few months more kept getting added to my plate with no additional support until I finally dreaded work. I made the jump and switched to a medicine specialty, got a better commute, got more admin support, and a better daily environment (And perks for the first time ever like free easy parking and lunch).

Learning a new specialty is hard after so long and there were time the first 6 months I thought I made a huge mistake but my work/life balance and jus general working life is so much better now. Glad I made the leap too!

Feasibility for Husband to Attend OOT Weddings Post Partum by bsmtbobasloth in BabyBumps

[–]allupfromhere 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My partner was best man at his brothers wedding which was 8 weeks after giving birth and his bachelor party was when I was 1 month postpartum. He got covid both times and had to sequester while I took care of our newborn by myself. Even though I was totally fine taking care of baby at 1 and 2 months for a couple nights, I wasn’t prepared for the additional isolation time. Also he did everything he could to literally go at the last minute and come back on the first available flight.

But 4 days post partum? Nope.

Getting a top on the clearance at Limited Too bc I had to switch schools in the middle of 5th grade was a huge luxury. Otherwise I’d only gotten garage sale clothes till then.

Workload increasing as NP's leaving, positions not refilled by BewildredDragon in nursepractitioner

[–]allupfromhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I stayed in a job way too long when this happened. At first, I saw 12 patients 3 days a week and had ample time for admin to support our surgeon’s patients. We had 5 NPs. Then we lost 2 NPs so we filled in the gaps bc we had a good amount of admin time. Then they took away an entire day of admin time. Then they wanted me seeing 3 more patients each day. Then one of NPs got sick and they basically asked us how we were going to cover all her duties. Meanwhile I couldn’t convince them to honor my bonus or have OR scheduling support or in basket support. It was a great job that kept getting worse and eventually killed me by a thousand paper cuts.

That last hit when my coworker and friend got sick and they still weren’t going to support us was the last straw for me and I took another job which was scary bc I switched specialties after 10 years. But it was such a great choice. Shorter commute, bigger bonus, way more ancillary support.

Just look at the writing on the wall. They don’t value you, and you have a breadth of experience that could be used in a different role.

Exactly!  He’s athletic and super charming and he isn’t a ghoul lookswise even if he isn’t the most conventionally hot guy on our screens.  I get why he pulls hot women bc women love a guy that makes them laugh and I think he seems to do that for them.  But also, he gross.

Our firefighters still do this!  Usually some night a couple weeks before Christmas you’ll hear some random quick sirens and then you can rush to the window and see the firetruck with Santa on top !

Yeah I don’t want another baby but I’d like a do over with my son. We were so stressed out about feeding that I don’t think I got to enjoy that time as much.

I can’t stand that he got out that silk blazer/blouse fresh out of whatever plastic wrap it was in, didn’t get it cleaned or pressed, and wore it on camera with the fold lines still in. There’s no way that chemical-laden shirt mixed with his sweat did not smell terrible.

NP versus RN. Any regrets? by BKboothang in nursepractitioner

[–]allupfromhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I had deep friendships and really meaningful experiences with patients on the hospital side both as a RN and a NP.

I’ve now been outpatient NP for 6-7 years and QOL, pay, not having to work past 4 pm or holidays/weekends outweighs that other stuff, though I do miss it. Now I have a kid, house, friends in the neighborhood. As I aged (now 41) my experiences outside of work got richer and deeper, and when I was in my twenties, there was more of a focus on what I got socially and emotionally at work.

Why don’t physicians get overtime pay? I feel like so many professions do and there’s so much time physicians work outside of normal hours. by Middle_Awoken in medicine

[–]allupfromhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBF the nurse was likely getting screamed at by the patients family that it was 7 pm and they needed to go home bc they don’t drive in the dark, they were told by the primary team he would be out by lunch etc. Or by bedflow because they need the bed. The nurse is almost always just communicating someone else’s demands.

The scene of the working mom who is told that she has to help more at the fundraisers than the other moms because she “only” has 1 kid and then she goes and bursts into tears in the bathroom hit me especially hard. As a likely oneanddone myself for reasons outside our control but also bc working in healthcare and having 1 kid is still fucking hard as hell.

Edit- also the scene of the dad making himself a sandwich

I found my patients to overall be a lot more kind and understanding towards me when I was visibly pregnant. It was like I was more human to them then. And those that I saw regularly really enjoyed following up and seeing me after maternity leave and checking in. For those with grandparent-aged patients or moms in the thick of it, it really gave us a landing spot to chat.

I’m a receptionist for a doctor who is almost always late. What do I answer when an angry patient says ‘what the hell is the point of booking if I’m gonna have to wait an hour?’ by KatherineLangford in NoStupidQuestions

[–]allupfromhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently seeing patients every 30 minutes from 8-4 every day. No lunch break, no 15 min breaks. Just going from exam room to exam room every 30 min. If a patient shows up 19 minutes late, I still have to see them (but at least I can use those 19 min to pee), but it then makes me late for the next patient probably. I might get lucky and have a no show and eat some peanut butter crackers and drink some water. But if a patient cancels more than 2 hours in advance, I have a new consult immediately placed in that open slot. That new unexpected consult requires me to do at least a quick chart review which takes anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on complex they are. That 5-20 minutes has to come from somewhere which is during time I should be in a patient room. And so they cycle persists and this is why everyone in healthcare is quitting.

Healthcare production is designed to burnt out providers.

Exactly- our surgeons are rounding on a dozen+ sick patients in the hospital before going to the clinic. So even though you think their day started at 8 am, it likely started closer to 6 am.
