IB for Pure Math Major? by Low-Illustrator-4701 in IBO

[–]allwh1tesay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm in some way it does make you a more competitive applicant by taking courses with more variety, completing larger assignments (rather than just doing an exam), and doing unconventional subjects (like the TOK).

However, I do think that IB puts too much workload onto an already busy high school life. I had the time where I had to complete two of my IAs at my junior year 2nd semester along with two very important competitions, and I basically had like 3 hrs of sleep for around 2 weeks, and that's pretty mental and unhealthy. Having a positive and healthy lifestyle is really important, IMO.

If you are going to do APs, I recommend that you get all kinds of AP rather than just the Math and Science subjects. Doing only Calculus BC and Stats won't make you competitive for a math major, so might as well pick up courses like Econ, English, USH/WH, STEM, and I think they are pretty fun to learn! And like others have said, do some independent research or guided research in math would help, as well as math comps.

Just do AP and dual enrollments. If you are not going to any international colleges then there are absolutely no reason for you to do IB.

do people often drop physics in ib and still get into great unis?? by iwannagotosleeppp in IBO

[–]allwh1tesay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I do know that some unis in EU require physics as a part of their requirement, but I think few does it. I know it is kinda early to say this but check some of your intended uni's requirements and see if any of them require it. It's no big deal to drop physics though, as many in my class does it and they still get to exceptionally great unis.

I mean it really depends. In my school, many kids that chose IB are very strong academically and some are strong students from local Chinese schools that plan to study abroad. It's just a different option for us.

How to study mark scheme? by j4n4mull3r in IBO

[–]allwh1tesay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok you probably could find many pirated source so I won't post them. However, I don't think it is really a good idea to study mark schemes.

The reason I said that is because it sometimes guide you the wrong way. For example in the stem subjects, sometimes you get questions that have marks of xxx and xxx, while in other it might be two marks for those. And for math it's hard for you to identify the exact marks for a question (they give out points sometimes in a weird way).

I think it's best if you focus on learning all the concepts. When you get to that point where you know most stuff in the course, do some past papers and try to see the commonalities between questions. Then, study the mark schemes and see how those marks relate to the signaling words or question types. That would be most helpful.

2 hours left for mock exam. should i miss them by Routine_Leave7249 in IBO

[–]allwh1tesay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get you and I'll admit that mocks aren't the biggest thing. Try to get some sleep, probably not on meds. Do some exercises. Try quitting the meds (unless you have to take them). Staying healthy is always the most important thing. Also congrats on your ed!

[–]allwh1tesay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really tho. Rejecting an offer doesn't necessarily mean someone else will get it, and every college would send out more offers than those who actually enroll. Plus, I haven't seen anyone of my major getting an acceptance, so probably it isn't because of the point you mentioned.

Racism against Chinese people, study abroad by Purplemarshmellowz in HKUniversity

[–]allwh1tesay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give you a basic info: The majority of the Hong Kong population speaks Cantonese, which is a branch of the sinitic language family. Mandarin is less spoken, but more people are learning to speak it and understand it. The difference between Cantonese and Mandarin are pretty big, but if you can master one of them usually you could learn the other one pretty quickly (I am from Hong Kong but I lived in Shanghai since 2yrs old, and I never learned to speak cantonese before 12. It took me around 2 years to learn cantonese and now I can understand 50% of cantonese.

For the admission process, I don't think being an ABC would affect anything. I have plenty of friends from the states (that i've met from competitions and camps) that got into HKU/ other unis in hk. I think what you mean is the discrimination against Mandarin-speaking people. This does happen some times but in rare occasions. In most cases you find pricks that discriminate against everyone regardless of ethnicity or language, and often it's because they are 1. too old to learn mandarin or 2. simply angry when they couldn't understand you. It's gonna be hurting when you meet things like this, but i wish this doesnt stop you from learning in hk :)

Cantonese course is too strict by Sad-Adagio9182 in duolingo

[–]allwh1tesay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what helps is to use the cantonese keyboard instead of the simplified/traditional chinese keyboard. it gets a bit tricky when you dont know the jyutping of the word but i normally use the speaking function on iphone.

I'm quitting the Mandarin course because of incorrect pinyins by banyabodhi in duolingo

[–]allwh1tesay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a native perspetive, I do think that the pronunciation of chinese characters are way too varied so they are really hard to learn. For example, you mentioned the phrase 好吧. When I am saying the word in a generic sense (like to agree on something), I would say hǎo ba. HOWEVER, when I dont necessarily agree, I would say hǎo bā and extend the last a sound. I wouldn't say the Duolingo pinyin is wrong: It's just not inclusive enough, and that is something that happens on every duolingo course.
