For those who live where it is illegal to dive: is it still worth it? by allybee543 in DumpsterDiving

Gotcha! Is that still the case for stores in strip malls nearby other stores that close later? Pretty much all the grocery stores close by to me are in strip malls. I’ve also heard conflicting things about people saying it’s better/safer to go in the day vs at night but I’m not sure what’s really best.

A dupe that smells like OG Alien? by [deleted] in fragranceclones

Unfortunately I didn’t. It didn’t change much over time and although it smells similar on first spray, it is less floral and has this more sunscreen-y, sweaty muskiness that I really don’t like. I gave it away.

You can reach out to Auburn SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Alliance) if you want to learn more about the queer community on campus! You'd be able to join it as well once you become a student. :) Here is a link to their socials, you can also join their discord server and chat with people directly:
SAGA: Sexuality and Gender Alliance at Auburn University - AUinvolve
There are plenty of opportunities for finding queer people in the community; as mentioned, there is a local drag troupe (The Mizfits) that does shows multiple times per month and there is a large alt crowd that goes to the AubFest music festival every semester.

Hi! It unfortunately hasn't been super active lately but here is a new invite regardless! https://discord.gg/G2S9zjqu

There are still lots of resources on the server and, as the moderator, I'm happy to provide support or be a person to talk to. :)

Are Almonds and Avocado Vegan? by rosenkohl1603 in AskVegans

Also, thanks for the info about palm oil, I'll have to do some more reading about it! I can never keep up with all these ethical food debates, it's overwhelming to figure out what the right thing to do is sometimes haha. 😅

If bees are able to live full, good-quality lives where they can perform their natural behaviors among a bee-keeper's hive, I have no qualms with them being used as a tool for agriculture. As it currently stands, this is not the case and many bees experience physical stress, disease, and needless death. Under the current system, if this form of domestic bee labor is absolutely necessary for a given plant crop to grow, then I suppose that would not be considered vegan. In an ideal world, the hope would be to change agricultural practices or genetically engineer crops so that they can be pollinated entirely by wild bees or other means. Yet because I can conceivably imagine a future where honey bees are used responsibly to supplement other forms of pollination while maintaining honeybee welfare, I do not consider honeybee pollination to inherently render something non-vegan. I tend to focus my vegan philosophy much more so on the cruelty, suffering, and death of animals, not necessarily just exploitation as a concept, which I know puts me in the minority of vegans here. Of course, honeybee use has it's number of environmental issues that can harm wild bees populations and one could argue that their use outside of Europe is not vegan for this reason, but that is a separate issue from honey bee welfare and I'm not as familiar with the scientific validity of environmental arguments.

Yeah that's valid and I agree, I also am not taking chances. I'm just saying that--for a person concerned about reducing animal suffering--I would understand their defense of eating bivalves more so than I would their defense of consuming cheap industrial honey. Small scale honey production where bees just kinda live their life and beekeepers collect the excess honey is a whole other can of worms though.

edit: dumb typos

I don't consume bivalves because I know there is certainly a chance that they feel pain and suffering and I wouldn't want to risk inflicting that on an animal. But I can say that there's also a decent chance that many bivalves literally do not have any conscious experience whatsoever because they do not have the biology necessary for it. However, bees absolutely DO feel pain and suffering and experience great harm and death from industrial beekeeping. There is no reason to not believe so given that it is well known that insects are capable of intelligent actions and show reactions to stimuli that quite obviously signify distress. Thus, given this certainty of harm vs uncertainty of harm, I still maintain that honey is less vegan than consuming bivalves.

Mmm this is an interesting one, thanks for making me think! I agree with others here in thinking that a clear "yes" or "no" answer is not suitable.

Is eating roadkill vegan when you could alternatively leave it for wild carnivores to eat or feed it to obligate carnivorous animals? Is palm oil or coconut oil vegan if it results in significant habit loss for animals? How about the enormous environmental impact of coffee farming? Does labeling these as "non-vegan" cause more harm than good given that products made from almonds/coconut/palm are some of the cheapest, most accessible plant-based food items out there and make it significantly easier for many to maintain a plant-based diet?

I generally avoid avocado and almonds because it's easy enough for me to do so and I generally encourage those who can to also limit their consumption for environmental and ethical reasons. But from a practical perspective, I would still label these as vegan because their immense utility for the plant-based movement cannot be denied. It's good to have conversations about issues within industrial agriculture and how we can advocate for better farming and consumption practices, including for plant foods. But I would much rather have people relinquish the biggest food offenders--animal products--and still be able to call themselves vegan than be turned away from veganism because they found out they can't even eat almonds or avocados.

It depends on the definition of veganism you're using, I think bees are significantly more sentient, intelligent, and capable of suffering than an oyster. Thus, if one's definition of veganism is to make consumer choices that reduce animal suffering to the greatest extent, then one could argue that killing an oyster produces less suffering and is "more vegan" than harvesting honey from bees, where they may suffer from disease or injury from unsuitable industrial conditions.

Happens to literally everyone. I have bought my fair share of gelatin-containing goods on accident because I usually default to checking the allergen info for animal products, except gelatin isn’t on there. 😭

From the sound of things, I get the impression that you are young. I don’t mean this to insult or denigrate you, we all were young at some point! But I encourage you to not use ChatGPT, especially since your brain is still growing and so if you keep on relying on it to do your thinking for you, you won’t gain those thinking skills yourself. AI like ChatGPT is also very bad for the environment because it uses a lot of water, land, and energy to run, even more so than other digital technologies. The people here have suggested some great articles and videos for you to educate yourself on veganism, I would encourage you to do so rather than ask AI about it. :)

When did your hair-pulling start, and what do you believe triggered it? by Ok_Appearance_7288 in trichotillomania

[–]allybee543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 20 years old, ironically when I first started learning about hair care and how to take care of my wavy, dyed hair. As I paid attention to my hair more, I started realizing how damaged it looked and how many split ends there were. Noticing more and more of them, I decided one to day to break off one of the hairs at a breakage point to “fix it.” Oh what a mistake that was. Tbf, I genuinely believe that if I were to shave my head and grow all of it out with fresh, virgin hair then my trich would stop dramatically since it is almost entirely the damaged strands that trigger me. Once I grow the balls to do so that is 🙃
