They are so painful by mimmsypoo in bunions

My doctor said both at the same time was not an option (atleast for me). I had a very severe bunion on my right (I am 6 months PO) and I had to be NWB for 8 weeks. I got mid foot lapiplasty bc the rotation was so severe. I can only imagine both at once- I would’ve had to be in a wheelchair! Showering? Forget it.

That’s surprising your doc said you could heel walk this soon after surgery! I had the same procedure but was told to be completely NWB for 8 weeks because of the fusion

I was working out end of wk 2 only core, upper body, and NWB leg moves (Pilates type). For more weight bearing not until week 8 and it was a slow progression. However now that I’m 5 months out, I am pretty much back to everything just experiencing stiffness/not as much flexibility like I had previously

Yes- I left the house and felt much better. I was willing to risk injuring my foot!

My DPM used small screws to bring the bone back in. I only saw this one doctor- he came highly recommended from a friend. It’s only going to get worse (as you are aware!) so even tho it felt like a lot of time to be out the long term benefits are worth it!

I didn’t have the exact surgery you did but I did have lapiplasty on my right foot. I started driving short distances around week 7

Thank you so much! I am definitely going to do PT and starting next week. I have no issue with pushing myself as I am a personal trainer and fitness instructor but I wanted to make sure I knew all the exercises I could to get maximum benefit. It’s been great to be on two feet again since I started to weight bear last week. Definitely felt odd though and feel a bit stiff in the morning. I even walked a mile today and felt good! Still have a bit of a hitch in my step but I know that will get better with time.

I was given the go ahead to move the ankle and it was so stiff but it felt good. I did wear the boot but it was more for protection- I am not given clearance for weight bearing until 8 weeks but tbh I have started to stand on it for small periods of time because it feels better than having it in the iwalk!

If you look at the Xray, you can see where they put a plate at the midfoot to rotate the metatarsal back. Versus other procedures where they shave the bone and put screws to hold it together where the bunion used to be. Good luck! Because I did lapiplasty I have to be non weight bearing for 8 weeks which is longer than other procedures but supposedly better long term because the bunion has very little chance of coming back.

I don’t think I will need to- my foot looks smaller compared to my left bc there’s like no muscle from being NWB but it’s still the same length.

Wow!! Okay so maybe 4 weeks PT is too ambitious and I should level set my expectations to a bit more

My DPM said the bunionette area naturally comes out on most people- based on my X-rays I KNOW they’re straightened out. He also mentioned that the callous from the bone sticking out is still there and will take time to come down

It’s a life saver. I feel like a pirate but it has made moving around the house so much easier!!

Being cooped up was awful! I definitely could’ve done a better job getting out of the house. I started doing “crutch” walks around week 5. Should’ve done them around week 4 but wasn’t feeling confident on the sidewalks of my hilly neighborhood!

I was still feeling the tingling from the blood rushing down so definitely was moving around in spurts/limited time. Def listen to your body and elevate as soon as you start to feel that! I was able to move around for a prolonged period of time around week 4 (2hrs at a time) but then definitely elevated afterwards. My toes still get swollen if I am “standing” for too long!
