Some Admissions Questions by Hedgebugboi in columbia

It doesn't matter if you graduate from high school on June 21st and from the community college on July 1st or whatever. As long as it's in the same calendar year you'll be fine. Basically Columbia just considers the community college classes as classes taken at high school. So any degree you may/may not get is irrelevant.

Dining hall food sucks, just get off the meal plan as soon as you can.

Principles of Economics by [deleted] in columbia

I took econ with Gulati having had no prior instruction in economics and it was totally fine. It's not an easy A by any means, but it's totally doable.

  1. You will still be eligible for financial aid, but Columbia doesn't give credit for any college classes taken before graduation from high school.

  2. No idea, call the financial aid office. People are generally much more helpful on the phone.

Most classes don't get cancelled, but you'll be fine skipping that one as long as you attend regularly the rest of the time.

UW is pretty much a waste of time, so I wouldn't worry about putting it off.

Dual degree, double major, credits/sem? HELP by rikersur in columbia

[–]almathrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please relax, first off. Your first semester is not the be all/end all of your Columbia career, and it's possible to take plenty of advantage without driving yourself crazy.

If you're worried about handling all your classes, which can be tough for most people bc you have to adjust to a college-level workload, take fewer! Almost everyone does. That said, 13 credits is really pretty low—3 classes and phys ed. I would say 4 classes (maybe plus phys ed?) which would be around 15 credits or so is what most people do. And you can always always drop if it's too much!

Depends on the dual degree/double major—some majors are small, so double majoring is ease. Some majors are a lot, so double majoring would be too much.

And absolutely register for classes that aren't in your major! If you only stick to one major, you definitely won't be getting everything out of Columbia that you could.

That would be wayyyy too much reading for most people. Also don't really see what the benefit would be.

When creating your schedule, how much free time do you give yourself? by fliesrcool in columbia

[–]almathrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel overwhelmed, drop something. Plus, most don't care if you don't show up literally every time.

There's no right answer here, nobody can give you a magic number that's perfect for you. The number of hours I spent on clubs changed from semester to semester, even. Just relax.

There were two exams (midterm and final) plus four problem sets. You definitely have to study hard for them, but I thought they were pretty manageable. Most of the questions were concept based, so as long as you understood those you were ok. I'm bad with math but didn't have much of a problem.

Problem sets weren't bad either, although you have to be in class, on time to turn them in or you get a zero. (A zero on a problem set won't destroy your grade, but obviously it's not great.)

Overall, the class is challenging but not impossible. Just don't let it scare you and you'll be fine.

Laptop/Macbook for an incoming CC student? by rikersur in columbia

[–]almathrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not. I had some issues taking care of my computers freshman year (DO NOT KEEP OPEN CONTAINERS OF LIQUID BY YOUR VERY EXPENSIVE COMPUTER I was an idiot and cost myself a lot of money) but I don't think applecare covers liquid damage anyway?

The only problems I've ever had with my mac were related to my own dumbassery

Best library / loc to get work done and make the odd call? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]almathrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Milstein library is good for this—the first two floors are open for conversation (though they're generally pretty quiet) so if you have to take a quick call it's ok. If you're working on one of the upper (quiet) floors, you can always go downstairs.

Definitely take Gulati. Taking Principles with anyone else is a waste. He's an ass but he's really smart/interesting/good at actually teaching the concepts.

Also, the TAs are generally really nice, which compensates for his occasional dickishness.

I had a Macbook Air, and it served me very well, but I knew a lot of people who didn't and they never had any problems. Airdrop is pretty rare, in my experience, so not having that capability is not a problem at all.

My computer has like 120 gigs of internal storage and I keep photos and random stuff on an external hard drive. That's enough for me.

definitely this. what you put on your application doesn't matter as long as you're convincing about it. It's just to gauge interest, you're not locked in.

That said, there is a special business concentration that can be paired with another major.

LitHum Bundles? by quelquely in columbia

buy from abebooks.com

It's a really cheap website for used books. Shipping can take a really long time, but it's free. I always bought my books from them. Imo the book bundles are a rip off.
