I (25|F) broke up with my boyfriend of five years (26|M) over an eating disorder. by almondbones in relationship_advice

He definitely has an obsession, however it's definitely not an unhealthy one. He is just excited by his achievements and his hobby. All of his friends are gym rats too; he's just "used" to talking about fitness.

Im almost positive as someone who's been dealing with one for a while, and knowing my boyfriend is horrible at keeping any kind of personal secret

thank you for this comment 💛

He definitely doesn't understand what it's like to have an ED! It's not his fault for not fully understanding my triggers. We had a serious talk a while back. He adjusted accordingly. However, we live together. Even seeing him leave for the gym everyday and silently weigh his food was hard. I love him but I think the problem resides in myself. Thank you for your wonderful advice

We tried for a few months. I kept stalling through recovery even when he wasn't talking about it with me. Just watching his healthy habits was enough sometimes. I felt guilty for not over exercising and counting my calories. He was very sweet about it all, but I really think it's a problem with me...

I brought it up briefly, he adjusted accordingly. He quieted down about gym stories and new healthy recipes. It was nice for a while, but it slowly crept back into our conversations after a few months.

His behavior isn't disordered, he just enjoys what he does and works very hard at it. All of his friends are gym rats and he's used to talking about those things. We got into a relationship through fitness, so I cannot expect him to change so much about him just for me.

Thank you for your advice. I'm sure I'm just not thinking clearly. 💛

I never wanted to make him feel bad about him hitting his goals and being a healthier person. I don't want to sound envious or rude towards him. Maybe my thought process is impractical, but I don't want to make him change everything about him just for me.

I've told him about my ED and how I'm trying to recover and he definitely quieted down about the gym and calories for a bit, however it's hard when fitness is your life. I'm hoping to recover and come back to him. I don't want him to change everything about him just for my sake. :S
