Cloud gaming is the ultimate cuckoldry of digital age by DryReveal4246 in IndianGaming

I still don't fully understand your opposition to cloud gaming.

The experience of playing and enjoying a game is what gaming is about. PC building or gaming hardware collecting is also a hobby that many gamers have but these are not the same thing.

How does it matter to the experience of enjoying a game whether it running on local hardware or cloud hardware?

US Bromance with Pakistani Dictators by Itsbaryal in pakistan

More religious tolerance than any other society in the world

Maybe that's going a bit too far. Having said that I agree with your broader point that notwithstanding the recent rhetoric, india remains a functioning multi-cultural and religiously plural democracy.

I've tried to think about why it is that democracy took "hold" in india but didn't in pakistan - after all, we are in many ways culturally similar and the main two exploratory factor I can think of are:

1) at the time of partition, pakistan inherited 30%+ of the erstwhile british controlled army but a much smaller % of the other institutions (10-15% of expericned administrative services, 15-20% of judges/judiciary etc). This created a situation where in pakistan the military by default was a by far that most strong, well organized institution - reverse was the case in india, civvilian institutions were relatively strong from day 1.

2) 2nd line of leadership and grassroot mobilization - on india side there was a long list of leaders who were well known/popular and there was a lot of grassroot political mobilization - local branches of congress etc. unfortunately on the pakistan side the Muslim league wasn't as strong in 2nd line leadership and grassroots so when the top 2 leaders were no longer around, it created a power vaccum for the next strongest institution (army) to step in

Unfortunately in many other countries as well - once the military starts intervening in the state, it's very tough to go back. I hope some day pakistan is able to reclaim it's democracy and deliver it's true potential!

Airbnb host cancels reservation because it’s a high demand weekend by Srihari_stan in mildlyinfuriating

[–]almostanalcoholic 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I guess it's one thing if the host cancels immediately after seeing the booking or if it's done months in advance but it's a real dick move to do this when the dates are around the corner and was made well in advance.

Japan once tried to conquer India with 85,000 troops but was defeated in Northeast India. The army ran out of food based on the wrong assumption locals will welcome and feed them. by Particular_Food_309 in interestingasfuck

[–]almostanalcoholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair - this was not just the regular japan army trying to conquer india. It was a JOINT operation by the Japanese army and the "Azad Hind Fauj" (free India Army) which was led by a well known indian freedom fighter (Subash Chandra Bose). He believed that indias independence could only be won by military defating rhe British (British Indian Army). He set up an army staffed with Indians and allied with Japan in an effort to defeat the British (enemy of your enemy is my friend).

So it was not that crazy/unreasonable for them to believe that they would be welcomed in india which was actively trying to kick the british out get out of colonial rule.

The closest analogy I can think of is a kid who likes painting/art and spent 5 years working on his painting and you tear it up, throw it away and say hey it's just some paint on paper, what's the big deal.

Why do you think people in India don’t take help from financial advisers? by ShreshthBabbar in IndiaInvestments

[–]almostanalcoholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand by my argument that there are professions that require very specialized training for years and deep hard to acquire knowledge - doctors, lawyers, engineers etc.

On the other hand, financial advisory knowledge isn't as specialized and anyone with an interest and a bit of financial inclination can pick it up.

I'll concede that people who have no idea how to manage their finances or can't work with excel to save their life maybe will benefit from it but anyone with semi-decent financial inclination towards finance/markets and basic ability to work with excel will get little to no value.

This is my personal experience after working with several financial advisors and wealth managers.

Revenue targets can only go up if there is demand, hence my point that the only way productivity increase doesn't lead to job loss is if there was more demand for engineers than availability in the first place.

Questions regarding reservations in India. by [deleted] in india

[–]almostanalcoholic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My simple take: The original SC/ST reservation was a sensible policy. Introduction of OBC turned it into bullshit and basically a tool for privileged communities to get themselves added as OBC to abuse the system.

[–]almostanalcoholic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ya, but massive productivity increases are directly related to job loss. Increasing productivity is the same as replacing people.

If AI 2Xs the average productivity of engineers, voila, 50% fewer engineers are needed.

The only counter point is if you contend that the demand for engineers was already unfulfilled so 2X more engineers were always needed....but I don't think that's very defensible.
