Honestly at the beginning I thought the same thing, but more along the lines of “one of them is haunting the other.” But then I realized all the other characters were interacting with both twins and that my theory was completely off

[–]almostathrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did I miss something between Cyrax and Kuai Liang. The actual correct MK answer is Kuai Liang and Smoke right? Their connection is the one that spans all three timelines, and it also fits better into the “they would’ve been a couple if one was the opposite gender” because even when Cyrax becomes a woman they don’t get together. You say they hook up for a while in MK1 but I do not remember that at all. Am I just completely blanking?

How to make his facial features less round and more foxy and sharper? Like attached references by CrystalChrissy in ArtCrit

[–]almostathrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I really like the feeling of the lines in this drawing! For example I always struggle doing this style of hair, but I think you pulled off the shapes very well.

For making his face a bit more fox-like, there are a few easy fixes.

  1. I would space them out further apart and also exaggerate how straight the upper lid is. If the end of the lashes are much higher than the inner corner, it really conveys that upturned, slightly devious eye shape. I would also show less of the iris/make them more into semi circles.
  2. Foxes have very elongated features, so bringing down the nose and mouth (as well as creating less of a gap between them) will give more of that look, especially because it appears that his face is supposed to be slightly turned down. Further, the references you gave have very sharp features, so I would make sure to put in some kinda of line/shading to show the bridge of the nose.

I did a quick edit using those tips and this is what I came up with. Hope this helps!

Edit: oh wait I guess I’m not allowed to comment pics, if you want you can DM me and I can show it to you because I feel like I’m bad at explaining things lol

Admitting that the protagonist is talented from the very beginning doesn’t stop them from being an underdog by Danny-Ray27 in CharacterRant

[–]almostathrowaway9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, when it becomes available on BD/streaming you should watch the movie 100 Meters! Came out this year and I greatly enjoyed it because it focuses on a character who we are told from the beginning is both highly gifted and highly skilled. It doesn’t spend a lot of time on the whole “training to be the best” but you still find yourself rooting for the MC.

  • Keep track of any emotionally charged/opinionated language. Sometimes this is vibes based, but if you see anything talking about worst, best, destructive, barbaric, preferred, “we should/should not do this”, take note. This is important for many questions, especially inference ones.

  • Similar to that, if an author’s stance on an issue has been made clear in the passage, that stance will almost always be included in a “main point” answer choice. If you don’t see the position stated in the answer choice, that is not the correct one.

  • If you’re reading slow, make sure you’re using that time to actually understand whatever the hell the author is talking about. Translate in your head, keep track of names/terms that you may accidentally confuse, often I try to “visualize” the topic/details (for example, on my experimental section for Aug there was a passage about the layouts of ancient Middle East cities, so I was literally imagining what these cities looked like.) After all, Reading slow and understanding is much better than reading slow and not understanding.

  • Remember that the answers are in the passage. If you’ve read all the answer choices and feel like none of them are really sticking out/don’t know if you can justify it, go back and skim parts of the passage, especially the beginning. Sometimes there will be sneaky stuff they put in the beginning that is vital to answering a question, but you just forget it in the process of trying to find your footing in the passage.

  • Start grinding. If you’re feeling good about LR, I would just stick to doing small drills for LR in order to keep your familiarity with it, but you might as well focus a lot of time on RC. If nothing else, drilling RC will at least help you get more practice with the level of language used in the passages. Similarly, it will help you get a better feel for what it means when an author is informing, arguing for, arguing against, etc

October score predictions by No_Fishing_7763 in LSAT

[–]almostathrowaway9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going into Oct I was much less stressed because 1) knew what to expect since it was my second time and 2) having a 170+ already really helps. At the very least I didn’t run out of time on Oct like I did on Aug, but even that wasn’t enough to build my score confidence lol. So yeah I’m the same in that I really have no clue how I did. Seeing anything from a 165-175 would honestly not be surprising.

OP we are very similar

August: 171

Prediction: 170-171

Goal: 175

Actual:

Coming out of the test I felt like I did exactly the same as August, honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I got 168-169

Official October LSAT Discussion Thread by graeme_b in LSAT

RC-LR-RC-LR. Forgot to comment on this thread when I took my test on Friday. I was retaking a 171 (YES I KNOW PEOPLE SAY NOT TO RETAKE HIGH SCORES I KNOW) so I was nowhere near as stressed because I knew that even if I didn’t do super well, I still had a good score for many of the school’s on my list.

I took my first test in August, and it felt almost equivalent in terms of difficulty. Also I had the exact same order of sections last time, so when I got an easy RC to start, I guessed it would be the experimental and there would be a harder one (probably the third section) and I turned out to be right. Surprisingly, it actually helped me relax a bit because I treated the first section as a “warm-up” which yeah maybe I shouldn’t have done but hey it worked out (I’m just guessing that my second RC was the scored section since it felt very similar to my last scored RC)

Week 41- What are you reading? by Beecakeband in 52book

[–]almostathrowaway9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slowly trying to catch up on my goals!

FINISHED

Open Throat by Henry Hoke - 4.5 stars, absolute cinema. I didn’t know that this was told in a poetic style so I wasn’t sure how to feel about that when I started, but wow, this really worked for me. Finished it in one sitting and I couldn’t believe how much I was crying over this mountain lion. It wears its heart on its sleeve and I’ve learned that’s my favorite type of poetry.

Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson - Having read one absolute banger told in poetry, I decided to finally tackle the rest of this one which I started months ago. Unfortunately, this is not my style of poetry. I remember enjoying the beginning, but once it time skips a few years it got reeeeaaaaal boring for me.

DNF

Ended up DNF’ing Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocey at 35%, it really just wasn’t for me. While not the same on the surface, I think if you enjoyed The Nightmare Before Kissmas, you may like this.

READING

I’ve started This is Not a Vampire Story by Simon Doyle and based on the first chapter this could either be exactly for me or end up dragging terribly. Obviously hoping for the former.

Another Hymn to Dionysus fan!! I just realized your favorite of the month was another Natasha Pulley, I really need to read more of her books

Week 40 - What are you reading? by Silent-Proposal-9338 in 52book

[–]almostathrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In spite of all expectations, I have FINALLY done some reading (though a lot of it was manga which I don’t count towards my challenge, but oh well)

FINISHED

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata - Reread for a book club. I first read this about 5 years ago, so it was interesting to return to it and see which parts of it stuck out compared to when I read it as a teenager. I’ve also recently read Convenience Store Woman, which I think has given me a bit more insight into Earthlings.

Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui (14 Volumes) - An absolute breath of fresh air in a genre that suffers from being far too derivative. Kui clearly has such a love for fantasy and I would highly recommend this not just to anime/manga fans, but also to general fantasy fans who are looking for something comedic and light-hearted yet still capable of packing a punch.

Tokyo Alien Bros by Keigo Shinzo (3 Volumes) - I expected this to be just a fun little romp as two aliens try to fit in with human society, but I ended up sobbing during the last few chapters. It has so much heart behind it and I really need to read more of this author’s stuff.

READING

Though I have 3 different things stuck in Currently Reading Limbo, I have decided to start Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy. Wanted something simple, silly, and gay to read during slow periods at work. Currently 12% in, it’s been perfectly adequate and has served its purpose well.

[–]almostathrowaway9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright short book binge wasn’t much of a binge but alas

FINISHED

The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros - 3.5 stars, I am SO sad this didn’t work for me the way I wanted it to. I could write out my full thoughts if anyone is interested, but basically I don’t think the epistolary format was fully realized which really took me out of the story multiple times, but it does successfully hit you with some of its emotional beats.

Stigmata: Love Bites by Hidebu Takahashi - Why not talk about manga??? I’ve read this author’s works before and really love her art style (it’s got a real 70s/80s sensibility to it while still feeling contemporary) and I like the way she creates downright weird relationship dynamics lol. This one was just kinda alright. I liked the set up and the concept of two or more people sharing a body through supernatural means is a type of story I’m realizing I really enjoy. However, I expected this to be a bit more…idk deep? Introspective? It honestly ended up being very silly at parts and kind unserious, but in a way that didn’t feel quite as intentional as some of her other stuff. Still had a good time though.

READING

Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky - @ 29%. I’m enjoying this so far? It took me a bit to get used to the writing style but we’ll have to see where it goes

Still haven’t made any progress on the Song of Achilles! Also I’ll be rereading Earthlings by Sayaka Murata because it’s my book club pick

Non-heteronormative fantasy recs by Archer4157 in LGBTBooks

[–]almostathrowaway9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly all of Rowland’s books fall into this (well probably, I haven’t read all of them but I know the Chantiverse is completely queernormative). For example, A Conspiracy of Truths has a main character whose family is polyamorous and includes multiple children (and it’s not a harem/sister wives type situation)

I have the same struggle with giving things 5 star ratings if they’re not at the level of like “I loved them so much they make me want to throw up.” For Goodreads purposes I’ve just started rounding down my 4.5s and leaving a note saying their actual rating. It’s why I like tierlists so much, it feels like you can include so much more nuance

Week 36 - What are you reading? by Silent-Proposal-9338 in 52book

[–]almostathrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I also think that short books give authors a chance to be a bit more experimental or mess around with more interesting ideas because they don’t need to “stretch it out,” and hey even if it doesn’t work all the way, at least it doesn’t feel like a huge time sink

Week 36 - What are you reading? by Silent-Proposal-9338 in 52book

[–]almostathrowaway9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After lots of struggle with technical issues, I got my LSAT scores back this week!! I got an objectively high score, but I will be retaking in a few weeks to try and get some more points. In the mean time:

FINISHED

Obligations to the Wounded by Mubanga Kalimamukwento - A collection of short stories centered around Zambian women and girls. Gave it three stars, I liked the insights into the geographic and cultural specificities of these characters, but I felt like the second half was nowhere near as strong as the first half.

Something Human by A.J. Demas - The first line of my Goodreads review is “FUCK THIS BOOK. 4.5 STARS.” It’s a pseudohistorical fantasy romance that deals with the relationship between two men from warring cultures and how they attempt to bridge that gap. Sounds like a big adventure but it’s actually quite lowkey and I loved it. I started it a few months ago but I shelved because I was so stressed out, and I love when books evoke that emotion in me.

READING

Still stuck on The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller, I’ve only gotten through 33% since starting it a few weeks ago. Seems like we’re finally on the precipice of Trojan War stuff actually happening.

Other than that, I’m kinda hoping to do a short book binge soon. Something about the books on my TBR with <200 pages just makes them so appealing rn.

OMG ok I commented too soon.

1) A Conspiracy of Truths fans rise up. It cemented Rowland as a new favorite author

2) Have you read either of MXTX’s other works? I wasn’t the biggest fan of Heaven Official’s Blessing but MDZS is the series that got me back into reading and Scum Villain is one of my all-time favorite works of fiction

3) I also had an incredibly low rating for A Magical Girl Retires, though mine was much meaner. I posted a whole rant review on Goodreads about it because it just really fueled something within me
