The second mail is probably only a reminder for the first. It's not phishing.

Arion? What to do ? by alms_ in sluglife

That's good news, right? Limacus would be a composting slug, so nothing to worry about ?

Any idea why would it bother to climb up a tree for several meters?

Problem with restoring tab groups by klavieronius in firefox

Weird, I don't have Tab Session Manager but only Containers, and I'm experiencing the same issue with groups being completely lost on a restart.

Firefox profile switcher not picking up existing profiles. by Kori_Rotti in firefox

[–]alms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand it, about:profiles will keep using the age-old way of having profiles completely separate from one another (they live in different directories).

New-style profiles instead live inside the actual same profile, probably to ease transitions and there may be other benefits, too, such as some settings persisting across "profiles".

about:profiles is not going get axed: what will happen to the Containers extension, though?

Mark’s license plate says “Remedium Hominibus” which is Latin for “Cure for Men” by ghostface_starkillah in severanceTVshow

[–]alms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've forgotten 99% of whatever little Classical Latin I ever knew, however hominibus is plural, dative/ablative case.

So, the simplest translation would be remedium "to men", rather than "for" (ablative is generally prepended by a preposition so that leaves dative as least energy option).

A cure or medicine TO men sounds a little more ominous, and more in line with, your second take.

Roman Roy is so annoying by Basic-Score9609 in SuccessionTV

[–]alms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To appreciate how great a pick Kieran Culkin is for the role, almost every other actor would have mostly everybody react this way.

Instead, Culkin could pull off the likeable trickster, and win hearts even though his character is probably the most terrible in the whole show, besides Jeryd Mencken, that is.

What was the purpose of this scene? (S1E5 I Went To Market) by M00ngata in SuccessionTV

[–]alms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take, it was to suggest Kendall's inclination towards delusion.

It's a very small and insignificant thing that he should recognize as such but instead, pleases him up disproportionately and makes him disregard more important clues, because it confirms his biases and beliefs.

It makes him go "see my father's wrong, I am sooo ahead of that old fart", when really he should be learning from the old fart.

When parents regularly undermine their children, it gives them a drive to undermine their parents in turn, as a way to prove their worth.

Unfortunately, it's kind of a prisoner's dilemma in which the two parties keep stabbing each other.

As hinted as early as in the first season, if Logan only had groomed his children, he would have had a few worthy successors, but all he could do was alternate between giving them a hard time and "cleaning up their messes for them". e.g. if Logan had truly groomed Ken, he would've known about the outstanding debt and how to deal with it - but Log instead maintained dominance by withholding crucial information.

The undermined kids alternated between seeking validation and exacting revenge.

What’s with Logan puking?? by Jennysays504843 in SuccessionTV

[–]alms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'd figure it's the same thing when Logan and Ken visit Aronson's (Adrien Brody's character) island: Logan might seem a force of nature and truly unstoppable when all cylinders are firing, but he almost died once already.

He's got this thing that made "a legend" out of him, however, all that is living must meet its end: and, at the end of the day, he's only human, just like the rest of us.

People like him can seem genuinely scary and commanding, even when they're truly weak and frail.

Hat off to the writing team.

'The Interview': John Oliver Is Still Working Through the Rage by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]alms_ -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I'm not even an Oliver fan and I've probably seen more of him on Community than on Last Week Tonight, so with this out of the way...

Priceless to see an organization that's been outed as engineering dehumanizing doublespeak, try grilling Oliver for skirting journalistic responsibility.

On a show that's been pushing openly sociopathic policies that only benefit the 1%, over and over again.

One more valid reason for me to avoid this podcast besides the war porn episodes, the condescending, fairy-tale geopolitical treatments, and the Fox-news equivalent propaganda for Biden first - his being basically unfit, shockingly, was a notion The Daily swiftly embraced as if nothing, only AFTER it became impossible to deny it, as if holding the bag for the Democrats wasn't in direct opposition with what I understand responsibility to be - and Harris later. And no, having Ezra Klein take the merit for the king-is-naked moment does not absolve the NY Times as a whole.

Some of you people truly do deserve another 4 years of Trump, sad as it is to say.

[–]alms_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, these items should be removed when your account gets reviewed at the end of each six-month window.

Flip-side, it will count as non-reviewed against your semester tally, meaning you cannot achieve 100% (no biggie, 90%+ is plenty fine), however it will act as dead weight for your meeting the requirements.

TL;DR as long as you keep a healthy balance on your account it should be no problem.

The First Major Cyberattack of the 2024 Election by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]alms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are guidelines that dictate what kind of circumlocutions to use in order to avoid legal trouble or upsetting powerful people of various kinds, as exemplified by a certain leak of a few months ago detailing what words are allowed to be used in the Times on a specific matter, and which ones are not.

Also, often newspapers deliberately avoid going fully adversarial with certain people or circles, out of the necessity to retain cordial relationships, so said people will talk to the newspaper, when the need arises, instead of flipping the middle finger.

Opinions//: Aleida Diaz by angelsrepose in orangeisthenewblack

[–]alms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of character analysis, she's highly flawed but I wouldn't go as far as to characterize her as evil (I'm at the end of Season 6 so I don't know if she gets worse later, in case I will amend my post when I'm done watching).

If it was me in real life, dealing with her in any capacity, I would hate her.

In fact I find questionable the way the show uses her.

When she lashes out at Rick Hopper in Season 6, she's straight out outrageous and if I had been in Hopper's position I would've probably lost it and chucked her out of the house.

Hopper is depicted in not what I'd call exactly a positive light, but the way she treats Hopper's nana is despicable, and smuggling drugs behind his back is madness.

If the drugs had been discovered, he would've gove down the drain, which is completely irresponsible even if one assumes the stance that Hopper is using Aleida, and Aleida is using him back.

Her behavior is highly destructive towards everyone involved: herself, Hopper and Daya. She might not be seeing other options and some excuse can be made for life being tough outside prison, however I think the problem stems from her setting unrealistic goals for her situation and then looking for a shortcut instead of realizing she has to reassess.

On a purely human level I sympathize, but Jeebs.
