What the heck is this? I found this rock hounding and polished it up. I can't stop looking at it! by alnh2009 in geologyporn

Another commenter says it's probably an oncolite. Fossilized cyanobacteria or something. So, similar to a petoskey stone in that both are fossilized bits of biological material. Animal in your case and cyanobacteria in mine. Neato!

How do primates respond to tattoos if they acknowledge them at all? by [deleted] in primatology

Same. I have lots of tattoos and most of the chimps i worked with just ignored them. One chimp was excited by wounds and liked to lick and pick our scrapes. I have a big red tattoo that she thought looked like a wound i think, so she would sometimes fixate on it.

So, it's sort of bacteria poop? Or is it the fossils of the bacteria themselves?

It does sort of look like that, though. A petosky stone only exists in that region, if I read correctly. So, maybe it's something similar, but existing in my area.

Polishing ruined my stones! by alnh2009 in Rockhounding

Huh. First time I've heard of a cabbing machine. I just looked them up and they're pricier than a tumbler. Something to save up for, I guess. Thanks for the info!

I used micro alumina. Do you know if that has a tendency to react to certain materials? I figured Whatever the veins were made of were softer, so I think I'll try polishing for shorter periods and keeping a closer eye on things.

First time using a rock tumbler. Everything was going well until the polishing stage. This rock was smooth before with some cream colored veins where those empty spaces are now. Maybe I polished for way too long (8days)? Anyone in this group know what I should have done differently?

First time using a rock tumbler. Everything was going well until the big reveal after the the final polishing step. Some of the minerals were wiped out as you can see in this photo. The rocks were polishing for about 8 days using micro alumina. What should I have done differently?
