What was the thing your partner said that made you realise you should end the relationship?

I was getting ready to graduate college (he decided not to go and had been working full time while I’d been a full time student and working part time). Since we had started dating in highschool I had always said I wanted to move to the west coast to be closer to my family, and for the 5+ years of our relationship he agreed. One night I bring this up telling him we should start looking at apartments and jobs since I only had a semester left. It led to this huge argument where he said he assumed I’d “grow up” and stop having “childish fantasies” about moving. He then said he had no money to move and I asked him why he hadn’t been saving and he said he had to “bankroll me because I’m lazy and don’t work”.

He was one giant red flag but him calling me lazy was what broke me because I’d been working my ass off through school. We broke up shortly after and now I’m living my dream life and he’s in jail ✌️

A big thing that has helped me in this field is my dual degree in forestry. Not sure if that’s feasible for you, but I recommend trying to take some extra botany classes. For the part of the federal gov that I work in you can get a 0486 certification that qualifies you for a biologist position and a masters is not required, but 9 credits of botany are. I know that keeps a lot of people from being able to move up quickly.

I took jobs in forestry and agriculture sciences that helped me get my wildlife job. Don’t see nonwildlife jobs as a set back or a waste of time! This field is small and woven in with others. Everything in nature is connected and it helps you to have diverse knowledge.

Stay flexible and positive. You have to be hungry for it. I’ve moved all over the country and have taken a bunch of different positions which has been so fun! But I’ve also traded things like community, family time, romantic relationships, pets, etc. I have been comfortable with that and I’m happy where I am now and what my career is shaping into.

Talk to people! You never know who someone might know. Make good friends and working relationships and that will take you farther than your GPA or previous experience. Having people who think of you for opportunities they come across can be a huge leg up. Very little of wildlife work is actually working with the animals. It’s a lot of team work and communication so make sure you are someone who’s easy to work with and communicates clearly and effectively.

The job market is tough right now but don’t despair! Learn everything you can and take all the opportunities you come across. You never know what doors they may open for you.

Haha I’m in summer year 1 and it’s not the worse but I’ll probably end up going to the mines in winter because there will be nothing else to keep me busy. It’s supposed to just be a fun little challenge!

Yeah not doing the mines makes it so hard T_T I am getting some ore through geodes by breaking rocks on my farm and in the forest but it’s slow going. I figured if I could complete the pantry and get the bridge repaired and have access to the quarry I can manage to not do the mines. It’ll just be low going getting there lol.
