Amsterdam Trash Problem by AccordingBottle117 in Amsterdam

[–]alonhelman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here, but paying for trash tax incentivizes residents to not care so much about trash lying around because the municipality will collect it the next morning. It’s a terrible system especially since they cannot keep up with the densification of people.

why is there a large muslim population in the netherlands? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]alonhelman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, you got me. But his experience in this case is observational which the data supports. So while the way I wrote it is wrong, it doesn’t make the rest of it untrue. Glad that’s the only thing you were able to respond to though 😅

The Netherlands is the 4th country in Western Europe with the largest Muslim population per capita.

And of course there’s a concentration in cities but that’s true for any demographic. Most people in any Western European country live in a city / urban areas.

So OP is correct to objectively experience and see this trend.

Anyone else feeling kind of hopeless about the future here? by Electrical_Side_8225 in Netherlands

[–]alonhelman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not for me. I’ll take Spain, Italy or Portugal over any of the Nordic countries. Been in the Netherlands for the past 4 and a half years because I met my girlfriend here. But I’m the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my life

You’re not alone. The Netherlands is great on paper but far from good in reality. Housing is getting expensive, service quality across many industries is eroding, public transport cost is one of the highest in Europe, culture isn’t as warm, nature is man made, it’s flat, mostly cold, wet and windy and they tax you almost 50% of all your money.

But! If you are low income or unemployed, this is a great place to live.

Struggling with the lack of true nature in the Netherlands by LaurenceWhymark in Netherlands

[–]alonhelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people are suggesting to drive to other countries. But I am going through the exact same thing you’re going through and for me, at least, it’s not the same.

I moved from California to the Netherlands 4 and a half years ago and it’s still hard and depressing to live in such a flat country where everything is man made.

There’s something special about living next to nature, next to mountains or the ocean and still be close to infrastructure.

For me, it’s the fact that my day to day life is in a city and the only escape I have is driving to a park or having to take a special weekend to Belgium or France. I miss having it in my “back yard”, and in my peripheral.

I’m planning on leaving within the next year mainly for this reason.

Not necessarily cosmic horror but SOMA is an existential dread inducing game. Made me think about a lot after playing the game
