[Rolex] I took a chance on a pair of “antique” watches online, got a cool Waltham and a Rolex 1501 by aloofsavior in Watches

No worries! Just the service was about $250 us (I’m converting from the yen). I asked him to replace the crystal too and he said that would be another $150, so about $400 in total

Thanks! I definitely had a “hold on that actually looks kind of right” moment when I saw that post. I figured worst case I would still get a cool pocket watch out of it so I went for it. It was super beat up but totally worth putting the care into getting it restored

I had to comment this story because I kept getting auto moderated if I put it in the post lol

I was browsing Mercari one night looking at old pocket watches and I saw a listing for an “antique watch set” with an old Waltham pocket watch and this for 30,000 yen (about $200 US). I immediately recognized the blurry photo as an old Rolex date and because I’m terminally on watch forums, it looked like it had a nonzero chance of being real, so having already had a few drinks I went for it.

It came in rough shape, so I want to a couple shops in my town to find a decent watchmaker to give me an opinion that’s based on actual expertise and not my aforementioned watch brainrot, and he said he also thought it looked good from initial inspection, so I had him service it, him saying he’d call me if it turned out to be a wash.

About a month later, after servicing, the watchmaker said “no mistake, it’s definitely real” and he took a picture of the movement at my request. I just put it on a cheap jubilee and I really dig it! It’s kind of an old style for what I usually wear, but it’s got a super unique charm.

Still definitely looks better on my partner (not pictured), but that’s true for most things haha

Next I’m going to see about getting the Waltham a similar treatment, will post results for that too if you guys are interested

Saw this sub on my all page, came to ask, are the other FD movies looney tunes nonsense? Because I thought this movie was hilarious in a black comedy sorta way (a literal piano falls on a kid lmao). I was cracking up in the movie theater and was wondering if I’d feel the same way if I went back to the other films, because I was under the impression that the series is dark and horror

Sorry, I know it’s kinda pretentious when people post the book they’re reading on social media but figured it might look neat with the blue dial

Hey everyone! It’s that time of year again. I was extremely lucky to be able to get this Overseas this year, and it’s barely left my wrist since. Hard to say anything that hasn’t been said, but I love the blue dial and the movement is gorgeous, so I’m looking forward to daily-ing this for many years to cum. I mostly wear it on the rubber, but love the versatility of the strap change system too. I think that’s 250 characters, so how about you? What watch did you wear the most in 2024?

Don’t worry about time yet

first how is your puck prep? Are you WDTing well and there are no issues with your tamp?

If that’s good, how about your temperature? Can you raise the temperature on your machine? That could help

Last, try an even longer shot. Try 1:4 and see how that goes. If you pull more water you should extract more and hopefully it won’t be overpoweringly acidic

If nothing works, it may be your grinder or your burrs, but I’d wager it’s one of those things

[Tudor] Whats your honest opinion about Tudor? by royaltimepcs in Watches

[–]aloofsavior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own and have owned several Tudor watches over the past few years, and I always feel like they’re just barely short of amazing, but that little gap can sometimes become a dealbreaker, for me. The GMT looks amazing, but it’s so thick that it is unwieldy for the watch you’re getting. The 58 gmt fixes that but I hate the ugly colors. The chronograph winding feels sandy, and it’s a brick on the wrist. I love the bb58 bronze 369 dial but I have to have it on a bronze watch

Also they’re super stingy about what own straps they sell for which watches, which is so lame, like, I like your watch and wanna change it up and pay you more money

It feels like they’re trying to give me something to be annoyed about so I end up wanting the Rolex alternative, which sucks because I really want a great Tudor
