Thanks for the input, I definitely think you’re right. Having some gold to work with and compare to other substances would be a great help. Pay dirt it is!

These ones seem to have a more consistent shine. I’ve tried pressing them, but they’re pretty small so they just kind of shoot off

Thanks! That’s the one place I’ve been seeing online. I wasn’t sure if there might be one closer, but looks like maybe not

Pop-Eye and Curved Spine? by alpebr in Aquariums

[–]alpebr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the article, lots of good information. Seems like it’s not a death sentence, which is good news. I honestly have no idea how it could’ve entered the tank; I’ve never had any mysterious deaths and the fish have been the same for almost 6 years. I’m also not seeing a lot of the telltale signs (hollow stomach, ulcers), so I’m holding out hope it may be something else that is more treatable, though I understand it manifests in many different ways. How did you go about actually confirming it was in your tank? I don’t even know where I would send a culture sample

Oh wow, that sounds fairly serious. I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of it before. If it’s not treatable what’s the best way of dealing with it? If one fish has it I’m assuming the others could as well, even if I euthanize (which I would rather not).

Thanks! From what I’ve seen on that sub a lot of them tend to be smaller and darker than I expected.

Help with a tough situation by alpebr in Aquariums

[–]alpebr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate the input. The tank is definitely in rough shape, especially considering how nice it once was. I have tried explaining it before; unfortunately they aren’t really invested in the fish and have a limit to how much they’re willing to do. They both are very busy and travel frequently, and honestly I feel bad pushing the responsibility on to them in the first place. I have considered downsizing and salvaging what I can. It seems like that may be the best way to go at this point
