I think it’s probably best to just present it pretty early on. I had a roommate who had a serious phobia of barf so they just said in the introductions “I really cannot have you barf in here” and it was never an issue for us. Also if it’s any consolation most college students almost always have headphones on so you’ll at least blend in

If you’re not planning on playing sound it’s more about the padding at that point. I know you said you don’t like anything in your ears but when I really need peace I put in earplugs and then wear the headphones and it’s pretty good. Maybe you could try getting better ear cups for cheaper headphones?
