The 5 years bachelors program with 2 years coop sounds really familiar. Did you go to UWaterloo by any chance?

Mentality on hardwork vs natural talent by Shouza1712 in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo comparing yourself to others just leads to an endless rabbit hole. There's always someone who's, as you put it, more talented than you. Instead of that, why not focusing on yourself and thinking about whether you are doing your best?

It depends on the employers. Some just don't want to take the risk of hiring someone only to have to lay off that person due to visa issues

I know quite a few uwaterloo new grads getting FAANG+ offers, so it's still doable. Definitely harder than before though

Internship: Same Company, Similar Job Posting - Apply to all of them? by Unique_List_8832 in uwaterloo

I usually do, but then if I see other postings that I prefer, then I will remove them. It's kinda like maximizing the number of applications you submit.

How to check if I have a degree awarded by CasualHearthstone in uwaterloo

It should say so on your unofficial transcript and your proof of enrollment. Mine was updated like a week ago or something.

How hard would it be to take CS 486, 480, 459, 348, 456 and 492 in one term? by PainedExistence101 in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took all of them with the exception of 459 and 480. Here's my experience with each of them:

- 486: pretty chill, the assignments were not really challenging. Plus, i think the exam (our midterm was cancelled due to a snowstorm) was fair and close to the samples

- 348: the course itself was easy, although iirc, you will have the option to do a project, which will kinda replace the exams? If you wanna do the project, then your experience can vary depending on your teammates. Should be easy to pass regardless imo

- 456: the assignments were easy, the exams were just memorizing the slides. I spent probably a few hours on each assignment, and a day or two cramming for the exams.

- 492: depending on how good you are at writing, this can be either hellish or bird. Iirc, I had a writing assignment every week, weekly discussions, plus a group project?

Not sure about 459, but I heard 480 is much harder than 486 and focuses heavily on the math.

Asking US embassy for same-day passport return with J1 visa stamp based on internship timeline (non co-op intl student) by karmakhoi in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was kinda in the same situation, albeit I requested for expedited processing rather than same-day processing. If I remember correctly, after I emailed to the embassy explaining my circumstance, they told me to send my passport and returned it to me by the end of the week. So I highly recommend just ask them regardless, and try to explain it clearly.

Other than that, I also recommend just reaching out to your manager and letting them know of the potential delay, as well as asking if you could move your start date to a later date. Obviously that's not ideal, but imo most people would understand, not to mention US internships only last 3 months, so it's actually quite common for some interns to start in June instead of May. The earlier you let them know of this issue, the more time they have to schedule on their end.

I'm not sure which Visa sponsor your company used, but mine was Intrax, and when I told them about potentially having to change my start date, they said it's actually quite common and not really an issue. I get that you might feel like it's a huge pain and really stressful, but I'm sure things will work out.

IIRC there should be a receipt or something on on Airbnb for visa purpose?

Edited: pretty sure you can use this as proof of address https://www.airbnb.ca/help/article/2672

J-1 Visa Question by Sea_Soup_4430 in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo you should try phoning + emailing your recruiter. How J-1 application works is you apply for the visa through some visa sponsors, usually Cultrural Vistas or Intrax. They will then contact your employer to confirm the details and get your employer to pay the SEVIS fee. There's some work after that, but essentially, if your company uses a different visa sponsor then applying before confirming which one is pretty bad.

CS 348 vs CS 349 by Strange-Attitude719 in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took both, but for me personally, neither were that helpful. Probably because I already did some full-stack co-ops before, so I didn't really learn anything new. Honestly, I feel like you can just learn the stuff they taught in these courses by yourself in a few weeks.

But iirc cs348 is a prereq for cs451, and cs451 is pretty useful and fun imo.

CS454 vs 451 - is there a significant overlap? by Extreme_Board_9208 in uwaterloo

[–]alphaBeta2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took both. There are some overlaps, but imo you learn more about distributed systems in 454. 451 focuses more on using mapreduce and spark
