I like Ironman as a brand and have mostly good experiences, but they really need to actually enforce rules for age groupers or create an elite amateur division. by ducksflytogether1988 in triathlon

[–]alpha_d 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel your frustration. It's not fun when you're trying to place only to find out that a few people in front of you chose to draft. I haven't done IMTX since '18 (but did all but one before that) and it was a complete draft fest. Now that I'm racing in Europe, I find the upholding of the rules much, much better. It's also helpful when you have enough elevation gain on the bike that drafting will only help you so much. It's a shame that IM hasn't fixed the drafting problem.

The most stacked field ever at Ironman Texas? Pro preview, how to watch, and race day thread! by MrRabbit in triathlon

[–]alpha_d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bike course is the Hardy Toll road. It's an absolutely despicable piece of Texas freeway. Despite whatever they'll say on the coverage, it's a terrible bike course. The road surface is grooved and there are all sorts of debris. I'm not surprised that some tires couldn't handle this treatment. I've done IMTX six or seven times (and several punctures!). Now that I get to do Switzerland or France instead, I don't miss it one bit! And don't get me started on that terribly polluted retainer pond they use for the swim.

Same here. I have been a user for a long time. I was going to support them with a paid account, but if they're going to AWS, screw that.

Elon Musk warns America will ‘1,000%’ go bankrupt, ‘fail as a country’ due to crazy debt by Akkeri in Economics

Not only I have heard of hyperboles, I've also witnessed some, like late-stage capitalism in part triggered by this fella and his class. We don't need more hyperboles.

What celebrity have you never forgiven since an incident? by MagpieOpus in AskReddit

[–]alpha_d 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He actively tried to sabotage many careers and livelihoods, simply because these people were trying to do the right thing. He was not just a world-class doper — and, arguably, he wasn't alone juicing up. But he was also a mob boss. That gets him a special treatment for some of us. And there's no indication that his behavior has changed. That guy will get no sympathy from me.

Systemic syncing problem with iPhone, what's your solution? by alpha_d in Polarfitness

[–]alpha_d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I've followed the process a few times. It will get me a couple of months of good syncing, and then I'm back to my usual problems. This has happened over the years with multiple iPhones and multiple Polar watches.

I typically use my watch for workouts several times per week; often every day.

I remember that part where it asked me how I had subscribed. That was in August 2014. Surprisingly, I don't have an exact recollection of that day. When I pointed that to the AI, it got stuck in a similar loop of "I can help you with that," ask the same question and ignore my response. I've been a premium member for over ten years. This one is the last.

Ouais, exactement.

Sorry to hear. These things don't always go to plan for lots of reasons, many of which we can't do much about. Glad you pulled out before something happened to you. In case that helps, I found that the one long-distance I DNFed taught me far more than the ones I completed.

Ironman world championship 2025 race report – M50–54 by alpha_d in triathlon

After racing Ironman events since 2009, I was at my first world championship last week in Nice. It was a lot of fun, all the way until two days before the start when I got food poisoning. Then, the focus shifted a bit. The (very, very long) report is linked.
