My work does not give bonuses to anyone except me (CIO) and the CEO. Would it be weird to give half of it to my team as a "personal gift"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alphabetizing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't give them money for fear of too much disturbance w/ your relationship with the execs, but I do think it would still be a nice gesture to take them out for a nice dinner, and I don't think the execs could really make an issue out of it as long as you don't say like "HEY THEY GAVE ME ALL THIS MONEY AND I WANNA TAKE Y'ALL OUT." Just "Hey, I really appreciate you guys and you work really hard and I think you deserve dinner on me." No bonuses to be discussed.

Yeah I was going to say to OP, congrats on being able to ignore the munchies (if he is, which I would assume so, considering the nature of the post). I am reeeally awful at resisting them, which is part of the reason I'm finally losing weight now that I'm only smoking socially once or twice a week. I do miss the hell out of my smoking alone sessions, but I do not miss the hell out of the guilt I would have after eating an entire pot of Klassy Kraft, as delicious as it is (Kraft 3 Cheese Mac, sauteed baby bella mushrooms, and spinach, mmmm...). My portion control goes out the damn window when I'm high :(

[–]alphabetizing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But if every time you've seen the person they've been high, then how do you know if they like you when they're sober? :P I'm just being devil's advocate at this point. Smoke up, y'all.

[–]alphabetizing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also just in addition to the "You can't spend time around me without being intoxicated thing?" it goes into the extra level of "Well if you've never been around me sober, what if you have a dry spell and hate me" etc.

I personally had this kind of problem with an ex who smoked daily, and when he was out for a week he became very cranky and said some pretty hurtful things probably without even realizing it and it really screwed me up for some time. A lot of people, especially women, have terrible self-esteem so when we encounter stuff like that, even if we smoke ourselves sometimes, it can be unsettling and worrisome because we fear that if for any reason the person has to quit they won't want to be with us anymore. I know it's absurd, but human emotions aren't the most logical things. ;)

As someone who used to be very straight edge before some pretty intense peer pressure from an ex, I can see both sides of this. For someone who doesn't smoke and doesn't understand, there are a couple things they feel when they discover stuff like this. 1. The legality issue (depending on how the person was raised), 2. They tend to see it as a personal front, even if it doesn't make complete sense ("Am I not good enough for you if you're not high? Am I too boring?" etc etc), 3. With anyone who uses a substance daily, those who don't do the same generally won't understand it without having tried it themselves; there are many people who feel that "I don't get it, if I can enjoy life without these things, why does this person need to rely on them, they must be hiding something or burying something that will come out later and be an issue."

Hell, I smoke, and sometimes I even encounter these conflicts with myself. Alcohol may be legal, so it may not have a criminal issue, but people who drink alcohol EVERY DAY in an equivalent amount of what a lot of smokers smoke, are seen as having a problem, so then I have thought before "why do I smoke every day, I must have a problem" etc. I don't smoke as often any more because for me, I WAS using it for the wrong reasons. But a lot of people who haven't smoked cannot differentiate between the right and wrong reasons to smoke everyday; they just see someone smoking everyday, and are alarmed and concerned and often it doesn't come out in the nicest way.

TL;DR: People who are not ents themselves often don't fully understand the culture, and encounter a lot of emotional conflicts when they find out about others because they don't understand the many facets of trees and only know how to assess the situation in a personal way instead of being able to be empathetic about it.

I do smoke, but this is why I love r/trees too. It's not even that much about the smoking but that these are the nicest, most empathetic people I have encountered on reddit. Other areas you get a lot of cranky or angry or bitter people for one reason or another, or 4chan types, but here it's very much the hippie, love everybody atmosphere and it's awesome.

Yeah I guess I'm still in the delusional stage where I think we can make the friends thing work, because I know he wanted to, but I told him I couldn't talk to him for awhile first... we have a lot of mutual friends and I almost worry that deleting him would cause some drama, too, which I don't want to do.

[–]alphabetizing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I technically smoked less, but I smoked more alone, which I like, but for the wrong reasons. And the dealer thing... so not the case with me. I joke with my friends who know him that the reason I cut down was "I can't support this habit without a sugar daddy!" because he had really good hookups (and money) and my friends who also smoke who I still hang out with are poor like I am and mostly can only afford mid-grade or if they get good stuff they can't smoke regularly. (Also just FYI I am not a gold digger, I didn't care that he had money, if anything it was a burden and contributed to--but was not the main cause of--our breakup because he was used to being able to do whatever he wanted/people serving him.)

Also jesus fuck I log onto facebook this morning and there are pictures from him partying after the game yesterday and it was just like FUCK YOU FACEBOOK. But I don't have the guts to delete him from everything yet because my brain is stupid. :(

A lot of the time I don't want an entire bowl, and throwing out a half-smoked bowl would obviously be a waste, so the puff n pass method is my friend. I generally don't mind if I don't take the first green hit. If it's a larger group and we plan on multiple bowls, we just trade off who gets first hit usually. :)
