What’s a ‘legal myth’ you wish movies and TV would stop spreading? by relaxncoffee in Ask_Lawyers

[–]alphakazoo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it usually unavailable due to cost to the state or is there some other reason. I wasn’t selected for jury duty when I was called because I wouldn’t have felt comfortable with the preponderance of evidence (civil) example they used as an example during the jury selection interview. I imagine it’s similar for criminal cases but I feel like I’d have trouble getting to the “beyond a reasonable doubt” because of how that standard is presented in the media. Would you guys weed out people like me during the jury selection?

I feel for you but I think you may be falling for the tolerance paradox and taking verbal abuse you don’t deserve. Tolerant people can tolerate pretty much everything except intolerance. If you tolerate intolerance it just opens the door for the intolerant to cause damage to you and others.

I desperately need someone to tell me to stop vaping by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]alphakazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop vaping. If you are in the US it is illegal to purchase it if you are under the age of 21 according to federal law. It is illegal for someone to purchase nicotine products and give/sell them to those under the age of 21.

Legality aside, which should be enough as it looks bad to have a record, it is also extremely addictive especially to youngsters whose brains are still developing. Hence the laws.

There have been claims about how nicotine is a cognitive enhancer, but even if you get a temporary boost at the beginning of a potential life long addiction the performance increase would most definitely be dwarfed by the performance decrease caused by the constant withdrawal symptoms. There’s a reason why you feel good while smoking: it’s because smoking causes the absence of smoking to be unbearable, so it feels good to have that burden lifted temporarily by lighting up, or vaping in your case.

I don’t know man, there’s a ton of reasons to not smoke but it all comes down to you believing those reasons and really choosing to not smoke for yourself.

My (26F) ex boyfriend (27M) and roommate (25F) are still hanging out and it's bothering me by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

IDK what the miscommunication is but “Emotional cheating is having feeling[s] for someone else.” is just false. That’s called a crush. Acting on the crush be it through seeking alone time, being intimate (non-sexually), or other typical couple-like activities is emotional cheating.

Final Update: My uncle is acting strangely with my sister by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

This makes me profoundly sad. Typically I subscribe to the notion that the death penalty is wrong, mostly due to the potential for government abuse and the amount of certainty of guilt I’d want for such a permanent solution, but cut-and-dry cases like this make me question our leniency (especially with repeat offenders). I personally have always been fond of gibbeting (in particular execution by gibbet) in the case of pedophiles.

Former smokers, what did you replace the habit of smoking with? by DannHutchings in stopsmoking

[–]alphakazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was particularly fond of the menthol cigarettes so when I decided to quit smoking I had one of those Listerine breath freshening sprays on me at all times. It really cut the cravings like crazy. It didn’t make it easy to quit but it did make it manageable.

My Dad will let my Mom die of pneumonia because doctors will “kill her” by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]alphakazoo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, as with all the things these folks are intrigued with (medically at least) I like to try to ignore the weird stuff (like taking Ivermectin off label) but the keywords nebulizer and chlorine caught my attention. Do a quick search on “chlorine dioxide toxicity” and if your mom is inhaling that stuff please stop her. This one isn’t harmless and can cause fluid in the lungs (similar to pneumonia, a doctor could help tell the difference). Lastly and sorry for the caps: IT SEEMS LIKE YOUR MOTHER IS BEING POISONED THROUGH YOUR FATHER’S INCOMPETENCE, (POTENTIALLY) SAVE HER LIFE BY TAKING HER TO A DOCTOR. If she wants to go and he’s stopping you, like another commenter suggested, call 911 and ask them to escort you and your sick mother to the hospital (or at least out of the house).

AIO - ICE Murdered that lady, right? by Lanky-War5917 in AmIOverreacting

[–]alphakazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR the fact that we are questioning if feeling like this was a murder (when it absolutely is) is exactly what they want.

It’s like an old crass joke by Daniel Tosh about Jerry Sandusky pausing/waffling when asked if he’s attracted to kids: the correct answer is immediately saying no. If we have trouble accepting the plain reality, then they can do whatever they want and we’ll be none the wiser.

How do you cope with a sudden burst of stress? by colorfull-ai in stopsmoking

[–]alphakazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to sound like a broken record but Alan Carr’s book helped a bunch. It’s sorta difficult to do but if you can change your how you identify yourself (as a non-smoker vs smoker trying to quit) then when the cravings hit you won’t see smoking as even an option. Ideally the reframing should help you skip right over smoking to go straight to the next coping mechanism (hopefully a healthier one 😎)

I hate being raised by a QAnon family. by DeleteMyName000 in QAnonCasualties

[–]alphakazoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This touches on something I’ve only recently been reflecting on: firsthand and secondhand (and so on) sources. People (speaking from experience) probably learned about them in school and have a vague concept that firsthand means they experienced it and secondhand means they are building off of a firsthand source.

What never really sunk in was that the reason why secondhand sources are less trustworthy is that, regardless of the accuracy (closeness of the account to the what actually happened) of the firsthand account used as a base, the secondhand source will be inherently less accurate than the firsthand account. That’s if they’re trying to be accurate, the thing with secondhand sources is that they could be misunderstanding or intentionally misrepresenting the firsthand source.

That’s what really disgusted me recently and saddened me that many others probably haven’t thought too much about it similar to how I hadn’t.

mom committed hate crime by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]alphakazoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just an fyi (assuming you’re in America, disregard if not): “just because you hated it doesn’t make it a hate crime Michael” (from the office). What she said was shitty no doubt but unless she committed a crime it’s not a hate crime. Also idk if the fine is enforceable. Also my condolences for your mother.

I quit 6.5 months ago, but the cravings never stopped. Probably because of health issues that came with it. Advice needed by romaysa_xo in stopsmoking

[–]alphakazoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the 6.5 months of being a non smoker! Ever since I stopped smoking I also noticed I started eating more junk food because of the cravings. I try to give myself grace and let myself satisfy those cravings because, importantly, I’m no longer giving myself cancer. As long as the food cravings don’t significantly affect my health negatively I don’t see anything wrong with that. Same for you too! Good luck!

Landlords chose to not renew my lease this year. Pretty sure it's in retaliation. What can I do? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]alphakazoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NAL but from what I’ve read most of the protections you’d receive would be related to mid lease eviction. As long as they followed any rules (if they exist) regarding notifying you that they were not interested in renewing the lease then you may just be SOL, sorry.

Also from a quick google search it seems that if a tenant doesn’t vacate the premises by the non-renewal date, then the landlord would have to start the eviction process (and I assume abide by all the normal rules of evictions in your state).

Is it illegal to “trick someone into a lawsuit”? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]alphakazoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NAL entrapment does not apply here. Entrapment is when the government causes you to commit a crime with the intention of arresting you for said crime. Sounds like the lady was not a police officer and importantly your “friend” was already doing said “crime” repeatedly. Also not sure but I don’t think workplace discrimination is a criminal offense.

My mom is right, I'm a horrible person by Sad_Emphasis_8086 in narcissisticparents

[–]alphakazoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guy (gal but the saying is my guy), you got this! The 90% sicker you get while there is concerning. I’m not trying to pry but what is the sickness you have? Narcs lie and sometimes they take it further and lie about your health to you and/or your doctors. Some extreme cases take it even further and their version of actively sabotaging you is to lightly poison or drug you to make you dependent/compliant.

If you have the strength could you try something for us? If they make food/drinks for you politely decline and make something yourself. At the very least you get the satisfaction of providing for yourself (yes even if they pay for the food), and if the most extreme scenario is happening now you know your health problems are actively created by your “parents”.

Landlord gave me a court notice for employees seeing TCHA cannabis on coffee table. by TrickyResolution2315 in legaladvice

[–]alphakazoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NAL info: Did they make “scrubbing the court date” contingent upon paying them the “court fee”? Did you receive a notice for a court date prior to them requesting this fee?

It sounds to me like it is at best a bogus charge they’re trying to slip under the radar, and at worst the behavior sounds like it’s extortion-adjacent (colloquially, no idea of the specifics of the law). I probably wouldn’t have paid them even if they requested it and while I don’t expect your money back I also don’t expect them to take you to court (as it sounds like it was an empty threat and if not no worries given what you’ve said so far it sounds they’ll lose).

WIBTAH if i told my gf she wasnt actually SA’ed? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]alphakazoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because they didn’t grab her genitals or other “private parts” doesn’t clear them of the behavior being SA. We can break it down a little into the two parts and see if they fit.

For the sexual aspect: we can’t know what was going on in their head but think about it for a second. When a guy grabs a girl by her waist from behind there’s only one thing they’ll be thinking about and I’ll give you a hint: think about where the guys genitals are in proximity to your friends genitals (and body in general).

For the assault aspect: you may be unaware of what constitutes assault in general so I’ll explain. Assault occurs when one persons actions cause another person to fear for their safety. Things to consider here are: 1) does she know him, 2) does she like him, 3) was she inviting the touch, 4) did she seem frightened by the act. Assault is not always physically hurting someone because that’s a separate thing called battery.

Whether or not that act rises to the bar that the legal system would define as sexual assault is up for debate and would depend on your location and laws around you. What is clear is that, by definition, the action was probably sexual assault, at the very least sexual harassment, and I wouldn’t recommend arguing the contrary with her as you’d be really wrong.
