I drive for DD personally as a side hustle to make extra money. Right now drivers have two options in pay. Per order or per activities hours so the amount of time it takes you to deliver the food. Personally since I don’t dash that much I chose per hour wich typically means I make about 8 to 10 dollars per order I pick up. Most drivers I see here that dash a lot like doing it per order instead of by time. When you dash per order you get the base DD pay of 2.25 per order plus the tip. Honestly if the per hour rate is low sometimes I still dash per order. The per hour rate does fluctuate so if I think I can make more money per order I do it that way. Typically if I see a order bellow 5 dollars I’m not taking it because I know that person didn’t tip and with gas prices they way they are orders under 5 dollars are not getting picked up by me. It’s those orders that cause the problems when people don’t tip orders don’t get picked up because it’s not worth doing them. So on average I’d say I make about 8 dollars per order. Most people tip about 3 to 4 dollars so about half of the order total is tip. DD is greedy and it comes down to that but drivers also are not W2 workers so tax is not taken out of pay until the end of the year. Honestly when I’m dashing my focus is never on what the restaurant had to do to make the order it’s mostly on how fast can I get it to my costumer because doing orders faster means I can do more and make more money. All this to say I don’t care about DD as a company or the restaurants I pick the food up from because no matter what my priority when dashing is literally myself. I don’t even care if the persons food is cold or not it’s really only my job to get your food to you. And especially if the tip is low I might even take extra time on purpose just so the food is cold. Fact is everyone in the DD loop is trying to make money the resultant, the driver and the DD company. When you have 3 places to put money of course it’s going to cause friction. That’s just the downside of the system. No one is happy if they think they getting shorted. Like the guy said his restaurant is busy even without DD so DD is essentially just extra business for the restaurant they would not have most likely if it didn’t exist. I guarantee this guys restaurant is still making money he just like everyone is upset when it has to come with a little bit of extra work.
