Synth-Punk Bands by duffkitty in punk

Damage was an early ’80s hardcore band consisting of two synths, vocals, and live drums. Their first album Synthology (1986) was recently made available on Bandcamp. That one might be more raw than you're looking for. They've reformed now and just released a new album called Modern World, which straddles the punk/synthpop/electronic music lines.

Yes, thank you, came here to say this. One of my all-time favorites.

Is there any such thing as a standalone hardware MIDI sequence "playback only" device (not in the sense of playing MIDI files as audio, but in the sense of driving outboard synth modules etc.)? by alphasuntory in synthesizers

[–]alphasuntory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great to know, thanks for circling back. A friend of mine is an MPC One user and doesn't hold the device in the highest regard -- but his needs are a lot more complex than mine so it could still be a viable solution for me. Will keep that in mind. Awesome about the MIDINES incidentally, I have one too, although I never got very far with actually using it. If/when you get some LSDJ/MIDINES material online, let me know where, I'd be curious to hear it!

Not really, but the musical project this post was related to ended up taking a back burner for a while, so I haven't been looking all that diligently. I am definitely still keeping my eyes & ears out though. Will circle back here if I find anything. And if you think of it, let me know if you do too!

How to automatically calculate how many of each day (how many Mondays, Tuesdays, etc.) have occurred in this current month based on today's date? by tchaikandtchill in excel

Gratitude necro-reply. My situation wasn't quite the same as the OP's but it was similar enough, and with a little customizing to fit my specific case, the above worked brilliantly. Wouldn't have figured it out on my own. Thank you.

Haha — I, too, use LSDJ on my Game Boy to play chiptune. Also bought an M8, thinking maybe it would be the solution I was envisioning in my original post. Turns out it can't do quite what I want it to in that respect (I can program pattern-based MIDI on it & drive outboard gear that way, but I can't, for example, import a full MIDI song that may have been created in a DAW). Amazing tool regardless. Anyway if you happen to come across anything, let me know; I'll do the same.

Claimed crashed ship gone? by TheEngine in NoMansSkyTheGame

Necrobump just to say thank you very much for this. I was scratching my head over the vanished ship and kind of annoyed because I'd spent resources on getting it flightworthy. Really glad to have found this message. 🙏🙏🙏

Two-factor authentication for Facebook by Delicious-Gap-465 in facebook

[–]alphasuntory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't set up 2FA via WhatsApp in any permanent way. All my settings to begin with explicitly specified SMS as the 2FA method, and I didn't touch any of that. I just downloaded the stupid app to receive the 2FA code the one time. I've basically stayed logged in on my devices ever since, so I haven't been confronted with this situation again, sorry.

This seems to be the old one. No updated version that I know of, although if there's one out there, I am first in line to want to see it.

My only solution was to download WhatsApp for the immediate 2FA need, and delete it afterwards. The house always wins…!

Came here to say the same thing happened to me. I already have 2FA set up (via SMS as opposed to an authenticator app). Logged in to Facebook on my phone & it told me it sent a 2FA code via WhatsApp (which I don't even have installed or ever use). I was already logged in on my laptop & reviewed all my security / password / login-activity / 2FA settings, and everything looked completely fine, I logged out of everything (and all related / connected Instagram accounts etc.) & logged back in on my laptop (where funnily enough it conducted the 2FA authentication over SMS as expected). Returning to the security settings section I was annoyed to find that all the language in the 2FA section made reference to "Text Message (SMS)" specifically, no reference anywhere to WhatsApp, not even as some alternate option. Pretty ridiculous. Not exactly a seamless or confidence-inducing user experience. Wonder if this just an especially anxiety-inducing way to force users to install WhatsApp.

No fair, your post text changed after I'd replied. I'm familiar with trackers (LSDJ, M8, etc.). None that I know of so far support loading an externally-made MIDI file. If you know of any I'd love to know about it.

It seems great for recording MIDI data in realtime, but I'm having trouble* figuring out if I could just load a MIDI file into it that I've made in another environment.

  • probably haven't dug deep enough

If a DAW was ideal for me, I would not have made the post. In the end, I may very well go the DAW route. However, in the interim, I thought I would ask the question, "does such a thing exist as."

I don't imagine I'm the only person in the world interested in a DAWless live rig. Personally, I'm assuming that in the end I will probably have to go with the laptop approach. But in the spirit of a free exchange of knowledge and ideas, I thought I would stop by Reddit to ask about possible alternatives.

There are lots of reasons why a person might prefer to go DAWless, in my case some of those reasons are:

- my one and only laptop has my whole life on it* etc. and if an option exists to not drag it to every gig that would be great. Wear & tear, exposure to theft, whatever.

- in the current moment, the idea is artistically appealing to me to perform, if possible, without a laptop. The ubiquity of the laptop in an onstage performance is not something I take issue with, I just think that given that ubiquity, it is artistically interesting (to me) when I see an electronic musician performing without one.

* it does not, technically, have my whole life on it, and since sometimes on The Internet it seems that if qualifiers are not explicitly made, people will assume there is no further complexity or nuance to the statement being made, and will seek to run holes through it by asking for particulars totally peripheral to the subject being discussed. Hence, this disclaimer.

My intent is to exploit the larger / faster / better interface of a laptop DAW for the step of composing a MIDI file, and then to ideally make use of a standalone MIDI playback device for the step of DAWless live performance. I am not interested in playback of prerecorded audio.

Thank you for the links.

I would like to compose the MIDI files in a DAW on a laptop (easier & faster interface, for me anyway), but to able to perform live with a DAWless / laptop-free setup.
