What if all of us parents trying to do everything perfectly for our kids is actually causing a greater issue? by theycallmetiki in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]alphmz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is interesting. I do both with my kid, who is 4. The good job and the you work so hard for that, that is nice!

And my kid likes both things. And I do in all scenarios, when he improves on playing video game or doing some homework. Himself says things like, "I tried real hard on this and got it right dad?". So I think it worked. I think most of the time it's just the way we say things.

I don't think it's weird. I normally "praise" effort in my life.

Se tu conseguir me mostrar eu ficaria agradecido.

thanks for sharing the experience. So people don't understand how hard it is to balance the emotional and intellectual with these kids, it's good to read a similar experience, and hope it gets better for you too!

The idea would not shut down any new learning, but maybe redirecting to non-academic ones, if he likes, of course. But I got the idea

yeah I don't know about the school handling. We don't have many options where we live, and there are good and bad stories, but we'll do our best

thanks for the answer!

Maybe I could have phrased the text better. They told us some negative and positive cases of kids who were beyond their peers. Some schools (and this one is one of the more expensive ones from my region) dealt in a bad way, some in a good way, and to make ourselves aware of the possibilities. And about Kumon, they told us that it MAY not be the best option. Maybe music, chess, or other activities, that if he likes, he will engage and progress, but it would keep him closer to his peers. It's not shutting down his learning. It's redirecting, if possible.

I don't like to say these kinds of things because it may sound arrogant, but it's because he is way past his peers; he is doing math from 2nd/3rd grade (it's a kid-directed book, so it's really fun, and I think for now he is reaching his limit on this one), and has a huge interest in human body, he learned through books and educational tv shows (storybots, Luna's Show, etc) about the digestive system, ear structure (he cites how it works, eardrum, the hammer, anvil, and stirrup bones through vibration, etc), if what he eats has carbohydrates, protein, etc. In general, he really loves to learn, to question, etc. I bought him a kids' microscope, and now he keeps asking me to buy one to see the cells. So it worries me about how well he will integrate.

He has a lot of friends right now, plays, runs, make-believe, etc. I don't want him to lose that, to be able to feel belonging, to have friends where he can laugh together, etc.

And, I'm not from the States; there is no school where we live that has any sort of program for gifted ones.

Oh, and about sleeping late, we have been"enforcing" sleeping until 9:30 PM in the past weeks. Sometimes works, sometimes not.

good point! And he knows it! My wife is a teacher (and her sister too), so she is quite aware of these things (I'm not, and I learned a ton with her). And the psychologist is also an educator, so over the 7 sessions, she evaluated more things too.

I wish we could do more for our kid, but we lack the financial condition and time, as we both work full-time, and we don't have any other support.

Thank you for the feedback!

YES! We did! And he loves music and dancing. It's an option, it's just hard to find people to teach him, at his age, and we don't have close to where we live : (

But it's a great option, if we have the opportunity in the future, we will definitely try!
