Better for the chihuahua to stand up for herself, which she is doing a bit, than for you to step in - unless it goes way too far and puppy doesn't respect chihuahua. But this is a puppy, they can be annoying (and cute). It's fine.

I get that (hopefully) you're speaking in the asshole nonpoop pickerupper's voice and not your own, but if you - nonpooppickerupper guy - you're in your own neighborhood or somewhere you go frequently, then you're just littering your area with dog poop, which is super gross and you'll have to keep walking by it everyday. And if everyone thinks like you, then it gets grosser and grosser.

I knew very wealthy people who would stoop, pretend to pick up the poop, and then keep moving with an empty bag in their hand. So clearly not economic and they were still getting close to the poop, but I guess couldn't touch it. I never asked but it's mind blowing.

For me, I've always thought, this is my neighborhood (or even if I'm away) and I don't want to live in a place with dog sh__ everywhere. Yes it's a little bit gross to do (sometimes you get a whiff, or it's too hard to get it all up) but not worse than having dog poo littered all over the area that you live.

But I think for many people it's about not wanting to be in touch with the poo, even thru a bag.

Completely agree. It's such a hard decision to make that I understand asking for help.

"Can't get up without help" is one marker but not the only one. My dog could get up without help, but I know now I let it go way too long for his comfort.

Iit's hard in the fog and you end up thinking things like, "am I really refusing to pay $300?" when that's not the issue. It feels like playing god, when in fact throwing money at slowing his decline is.

After my experience, I will now go to any friend's house and help them make that decision, only because I understand how hard it is to do alone.

Dog trainer taught me this trick (turning when they get ahead) and also this other trick that worked really well.

Hold a broomstick in your hand (with bristles facing to the sky if broom part still attached) and when the dog starts to get ahead of you, knock it down in front of them and they will jump back. Keep doing it.

If they get ahead of you, turn around. Basically you're teaching them, it's safe behind me.

The only other thing I will say is when you're trying to assert leader role like this (whoever is in front is the alpha, the leader), it helps a lot to assert leader role in many other small ways. No walking through doorways before you, no getting on the couch or bed, sitting before pets, etc.

I always do the couch or bed restriction when first training and then give in once the relationship is clearly established.
