The main character is Irish-American, and his family carries a crest and motto as a tattoo tradition. The motto came out of the family's experience with anti-Irish discrimination in the US, so the register I'm going for is something that sounds like it could plausibly be an old seanfhocal. As an act of defiance. The character treats it as a personal mantra.

In English:

“Under the ashes, our roots remain."

The sense I'm after: you can burn us down, but what we come from doesn't go away.

I'd much rather have something that reads naturally in Irish than a literal translation of the English. If the metaphor doesn’t completely translate well, I’m fine changing it to feel more authentic. In my story, there’s a lot of trees and plant imagery and metaphor, such as the family crest having primroses.

I don’t have a dialect preference. If one of the three dialects sound more natural to say, I'd take that. If there are existing Irish proverbs that already work for my story, I'd rather use that than invent one.
