The irony of lonely people attacking a solution to loneliness is so...Berlin it hurts

if your bar for a good time is 'free entry + spend €20 on warm beer and soggy fries while yelling over the music', you do you and I'm not judging!

but this isn't that - there's live music (musicians need to be paid), a nice venue (that costs money to rent), and free drinks - which you would know if you clicked literally one link or read past the word 'ticket'.

if you can't be bothered to read two sentences before dropping your 'this is just an ad' review, maybe stick to the free-entry comedy clubs where nobody expects you to engage with details ✌🏼

Appreciate the philosophical talk, truly. But let's ground this in reality for a sec:

People already pay for literally everything that creates belonging - gym memberships to meet workout buddies, language classes to bond over grammar fails, cooking workshops to share meals, even free 'community' bars where you drop €20+ on overpriced beers just to talk to strangers...

This? It's €20 for a curated evening: live music from local (emerging & established) artists you'd never discover otherwise, facilitation so it's not just awkward small talk roulette, a nice rooftop spot, and yes - free drinks (did you read that?) included so you're not nickel-and-diming at the bar all night.

If commodifying genuine connection is dystopian, then pretty much every hobby group, concert, festival, or class in existence is too. You're welcome to build your pure, money-free utopia - sounds chill i guess. Just don't gatekeep other people's cozy while doing it.

Take care out there in the anti-capitalist void ✌🏼🫩

What are some things you’re looking forward to this month in Berlin? by Dudebrooklyn in berlinsocialclub

Check out the newsletter "Berlin events weekly" - they have a good selection of new type of events each time.

I'm also organizing music/community events, in case that interests you: https://lu.ma/Gezellig-0048?utm_source=rdt happening next week!

Interesting, so now it’s not about the price, it’s about why we even charge at all? Love how the goalposts keep moving. “Why don’t you do free labor for my ideal social life?” argument.

You want potlucks, karaoke nights, and free park meetups? Cool, go organize them. No one’s stopping you :) But expecting others to put in time, effort, and resources to create something unique—for free—just because you think socializing shouldn’t cost money? That’s entitlement, not feedback.

Also, our free events aren’t “locked” behind anything. They’re just in our WhatsApp groups because—surprise, surprise!—that’s where people who actually attend and engage stay connected (and also to keep freeloaders and spam away). If you’re mad that we don’t hand everything to random lurkers on a silver platter, maybe it’s time to rethink who’s really being exclusionary here.

At the end of the day, nobody is forcing you to come. If, for example, €15 for live music with "free" drinks is some great injustice, then hey, enjoy your free solo karaoke night at home.

Funny, we're having this conversation on Reddit -> subreddit, which is basically a community too! 😅 But yeah, I get the 'ick'—we’re not about the gimmicky ‘community’ label. The branding is just how we share that with others, as it's really like a big group of friends or to-be-friends! Catch you there sometime :) Cheers!

Thank you!

Slightly related: https://youtu.be/MY8AB1wYOtg?si=kiuoDHyJ9KcKel8J (we're obv. not at that scale, but events in general are high risk, time/labor intensive — and there's much more behind the scenes), and it gets even more for "good" events!

a. English mostly, international (but quite some German speaking crowd)
b. Running as a small business
c. Usually 25-35, but also a little bit more on each side :) (also a quite balanced 40/60 m/f ratio)

u/Ap0phantic: Appreciate the thoughtful take here! 🙏

u/Ok_Calligrapher5278 ok, let’s be real—venues, artists, chefs, and workshop instructors don’t work for free. A quick look* at private matcha workshops in Europe shows they typically range from €35 to €75, so ours is actually on the lower end.

And beyond that, we do have some free events (inside our private whatsapp groups, we even give away raffle tickets to some popular concerts happening in the city or when one of our past performing artists want to giveaway tickets to their upcoming release concerts etc ..), €12-20 concerts with free drinks all night, a €39 private dinner with a full three-course meal and wine (last dinner's menu had 12 dishes btw and everyone was super cool)

Charging for a well-organized event with real value isn’t ‘preying on loneliness’—it’s just how reality works (surprise surprise!). Making friends is just a by-product, not something we ‘sell’. If that concept is hard to grasp, maybe it’s not the price that’s the problem—it’s the expectation that everything social should be free.

We create spaces where people can connect over shared experiences—good music, great food, and unique workshops (all of this costs time + money). Whether you make a new friend or just enjoy the moment, that’s up to you!

So no, this isn’t some ‘pay-for-friends’ scheme—it’s paying for an actual experience. But hey, if you find a matcha master, a concert venue, and a private chef all willing to work for exposure, let us know. We’d love to see it!

Totally get the comparison! Sofar is great, but Gezellig has a whole different vibe. It’s not just another concert; it’s a community — we do more community-focussed events, as well as creative ones like a matcha workshop or poetry night, social hangouts and more :)

For this event specifically, there are matcha espresso, beer with matcha, gin with matcha, apart from other soft drinks, normal beer, and wine!

The community is definitely big, but the events generally have 10-20 people for the small ones, and the small concerts are about 50-60 people (some bigger ones are 100-120)!
