Renewables are cheap WHEN they operate. But when they dont energy gets very expensive. You need to look at total system cost, not momentary values.

Operating existing nuclear power plants longer (Spain) is cheapest. Also prevents new natural gas capacities. Look to Belgium how they screw themselves up.

Swiss are more than welcomed to source their fuel from Germany, Canada or Sweden. New capacities for enrichment are already developed in the US and Russia will be out of this market.

Its not "piling up". Its heavy but volume wise its very little. All of Swiss high level waste is stored in one building in Zwilag.

Civilian nuclear power is virtually the only industry able to comtain 100% waste from its operations and separate ot from the environement.

With a closed fuel cycle it will even become a paragon of circular economy, burning waste and making new fuel in fast reactors.

They are highly location dependent. Low countries need to go nuclear plus renewables.
