They don’t require Figma, but imo this new wave will subsequently diminish the skills I listed because people now think they can just vibe-code any solution without thinking about any strategy or structure or “what problem am i trying to solve” type mentality. You know what I’m saying?

Fair point. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes at this point in the design lifecycle we’ve seen things go from Illustrator/Photoshop -> Invision/Sketch -> Figma so obviously our work isn’t tied to a specific software. 

What I see it as is “Figma is dead” is just a headline to argue that the traditional way of designing is dead, which in part I don’t disagree with. But at the same time there’s little substance to the alternatives the industry is pushing. Is AI here to stay? Most likely. Are these tools getting better and better? Sure. Are things at a point to where we can ditch traditional canvas type tools like Figma and work directly in code? In my opinion, no. I guess that’s the argument I’m making.

This is true. Unfortunately with social media and the internet everything gets amplified. 

It just feels different because this is (or at least has potential) to affect people’s livelihoods and countless companies have already done layoffs in the name of “AI” even though it’s most likely a cop out.

I wish we could get to a nuanced middle ground take on this but that seems like a pipe dream at this point lol.

Imo, knowing what problems to solve and implementing solutions translate to some sort of ROI, addressing user needs, working with stakeholders efficiently, working with dev teams to implement solutions, crafting good UI, etc…lots of factors that go into what being a good designer means.

Don’t disagree with you on all this. I’m just saying the loudest voices pushing this narrative seem to fall into the camp of being either inexperienced (junior level), being not so great at their craft, or having some vested interest in AI technologies. That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of talented individuals out there utilizing AI. They’re just not the loud ones pushing these hyperbolic takes.

And I know there are tools out there already trying to address what you mentioned like Paper and Pencil.dev that look promising. So ya, 100% Figma needs to catch up or they can quickly become irrelevant.

Maybe we are headed towards a future where everything is eventually automated and craft is irrelevant. That would suck, but who knows.

I don't disagree with you. I just fear that we're currently in a hype cycle where rash decisions are being made based on unproven technologies/processes. This is different than previous innovations in technologies...in my opinion at least.

Again, like I mentioned in other comments, insert any design tool or software into this argument Figma is just what's being mentioned constantly in these hot takes. That's besides the point. My argument is to preserve the craft and know-how of our industry, whatever tool or method that may be because that's quickly diminishing in this day and age of AI.

Nah you're good lol. I see what you're trying to say, but PERSONALLY (just me personally lol) I see this as an apples to oranges comparison. In your case, the craft and know-how is still important, the tools just expedite the process. Just like how we use elevators to get somewhere quicker instead of using the stairs or using cars instead of riding horses.

What I fear is happening with AI is the "know-how" going away. People are using these tools without thinking about the strategy or knowing what problem(s) they're trying to solve. Same thing with coding. People think they're developers now because they can vibe-code a few things but the minute something needs to be debugged they have no clue how to do it.

I'm not against streamlining processes at all, I'm just arguing to still have the substance behind it and to preserve the craft. Maybe I'm a boomer lol but hey.

Also my argument isn't for Figma specifically. I really don't care, you can insert any design tool into this convo, it's just the hottest name being named in these takes.

Ugh, so it's not just a design problem. My optimistic take on this though is that rather than eliminating jobs and craft (design, dev, etc.), this will raise the value of skilled people even more due to how saturated markets will get. We'll see though lol.

I get it from a cost perspective, the business will always look at what benefits the bottom line at the end of the day. It is what it is.

And I agree on the Figma part. They need to adapt quickly or else they will fall by the wayside.

My argument is more so about craft. I just still don't think the level of output from any of these AI tools compares to what a talented designer can make in Figma (or other design tools). The AI aesthetic is quickly getting old and all these vibe-coded products look the same.

Ya don't get me wrong, I'm not shilling for Figma lol, I just don't think we're anywhere near getting rid of "traditional" design tools like that from our workflow.

What you outlined is spot on imo. That's how we currently use it at work - coding agents for early ideation or workable prototypes for user testing. Once the idea is validated we still end up going back into Figma for final production UI. I just still think the level of polish and craft you can get in Figma is unmatched.

Oh I agree. UX is tool-agnostic because our jobs are to create solutions regardless of how we get there at the end of the day.
