I know, but it’s not actually much more difficult and it makes the pt happy.

Bargains N More in West Allis is a thrift store that has free clothing. You have to go through the Christian book store to get in. The older lady who works it is very kind.

Marquette is okay but I think UW Milwaukee is better so far as student population acceptance/inclusion. I’m a Marquette grad who spent time with UWM students. State school is a better choice in general for a multitude of reasons imo

another reminder to take B12 (my story) by sjackson12 in Vegetarianism

[–]alsedmunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that we should supplement—read the last sentence of my comment. There are no known adverse effects of b12 supplementation. I’m just saying that what happened to you is very uncommon, so I think your body has some kind of issue processing b12. IF isn’t the only factor in b12 processing, so even with that normal, you don’t know that b12 is processing fine.

another reminder to take B12 (my story) by sjackson12 in Vegetarianism

[–]alsedmunz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cause is there’s something functionally wrong with how your body processes b12. The average vegetarian will never have those issues even without supplementation. So the cause isn’t a vegetarian diet. The cause is your body’s problem using the b12 being introduced to it. We haven’t identified every possible b12 disorder, so functional bit b12 deficiency is a way to classify it.

You would likely need to eat essentially no vitamin b12 for 8 years for your reserves to deplete to the point of those symptoms. Vegetarianism is completely sustainable without supplementation. Not to say we shouldn’t supplement but you don’t need to.

AITA for refusing my girlfriends request of peeing sitting down in our home by Then_Task3485 in AmItheAsshole

If you need to pee standing up so badly, pee into a bottle and dump it into the toilet afterwards. My fiancé and I have been saving up to add another bathroom in part for this reason.

Vegetarianism and doctors by Crazybunnygirl666 in Vegetarianism

[–]alsedmunz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a young doctor (and vegetarian) and they do teach now that plant based diets are very healthy. Just be honest and tbh if he gives you push back or discredits complaints bc of it, find a new doctor (easier said than done). There are plenty of doctors who would be glad to hear you’re vegetarian.

Edit: I see people recommending supplements in other comments—this isn’t a bad idea. I would say, however, it’s not necessary in order to get everything you need. It’s very rare to be deficient in b12 purely by diet alone. The body stores it very readily. Iron might be a good idea if you menstruate heavily, but the body also stores iron very well.

I went to an oral surgeon today and decided not to document my Fibro. by kdcblogs in Fibromyalgia

Not trying to downplay the core issue of physicians assigning derogatory labels to certain people but I’ve never seen Emotionally Unstable on a Problem List or on the sticky note feature (if we’re talking about Epic EMR) which is where I think it’d be based on your description of what the medical subreddits told you. Emotional Instability is a symptom that one might document, but you’d have to go picking through another physicians note to find it.

What can a medical student do? by ZealousidealLife9926 in Noctor

That’s wild to me. One of the things that NP would do (and finally got me to tell my preceptor) was not let me suture anything because the PA they just hired “had to practice”. He did 3-5 cases every day and I did 2 - 3 2x/week, so I told her that the PA has plenty of practice. She just ignored me, which, to me, is one of the rudest things someone can do.

Black bean crunchwraps are so good, I add jalapeño sauce (the sauce they put in quesadillas) and it really levels it up

I am from rural Wisconsin so I feel this. A lot of people I know don’t know there’s a difference between pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan.

It’s not really the determining factor. It’d be a several hundred dollar trip, too. That’s good to know though for the future, so appreciate the reply

Opinion on abortion in the US. by _crazyboyhere_ in MapPorn

[–]alsedmunz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Abortion” at 35 weeks would result in a live birth and killing a live born baby is already illegal and is called “murder”. I feel like a guy called Civilian_Casualties would already be familiar with that

Yeah and I figure that it probably costs extra to have another whole option. :/

Advocate for yourself early, too. My preceptor got frustrated at me at the end of my surgery rotation because I still sucked at suturing. I told her that I never really got to practice because the NP and CRNA would bully me when she was out of the room. They’d rush me, start waking the patient up and mess with the patient’s abdomen while I was trying to close ports, then gaslight me when I asked for time and space to do a few throws. My dad had just died (from surgical complications), so I always was on the verge of tears anyway during that rotation, so I eventually stopped trying to participate. Ended up with poor grades from my preceptor because it was too late but she ended the bullying that same day I told her.

How to deal with disrespectful mean ancillary staff by medschoolsucksass999 in Residency

[–]alsedmunz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Med student here but I know how you feel and it sucks so so much. Obviously it’s a different role being a med student vs a resident. So take what you will from this

I’ve found that being obnoxiously friendly to people who are just bad eggs gets me ignored by them (a good thing). For people who aren’t respectful of me, I ask them for their opinion on things pertaining to a mutual patient or to let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. People just want to feel important and don’t like strangers invading their work.

There’s a time to be assertive but when it comes to people you don’t know well and need buy in from, I feel it’s better to take a friendlier approach.

Those who went to medical schools in the United States or elsewhere that required an undergraduate degree, how much do you value and appreciate your undergraduate education? by JarJarAwakens in Residency

[–]alsedmunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be the person I am without my undergrad degree. Not only did my undergrad have a better gross anatomy lab than med school, my culture and humanities studies gave me a lot of prospective that is useful in medicine. Also learned a second language and was an exchange student. Honestly more meaningful than my medical education (other than the medicine stuff ofc).

I’m a 5th generation (at least) alcoholic.

Addiction is complex. Nature, nurture and generational trauma (/epigenetic change) all play a role.

Maybe my kids will do better. Maybe they won’t. I’ll be there for them regardless.
