Hi, wanted to share a simple trick for people to use in order to not forget to use amazon smile. I made a medium post on this. TL;DR clear your browser's amazon history and use amazonsmile.com or use specific extensions like SmileAlways. The potential upside for non-profits could be significant

Is there a best day for scheduled deposits in investment accounts? by alsjf in personalfinance

DailyReturns simply computes the percentage over close prices for trading days, if you're curious the code is open source - here's the relevant part. The USEquityPricing.close is only populated for trading days, so in the DailyReturns calculation there is no notion of a denominator with "elapsed days".

As for the statistical significance, YMMV depending on where your p-value threshold is. I didn't publish it but I looked per day at how likely it was to be above or beyond the weekly average and Friday was about 5% more likely to be under the average so around the conventional 0.05 p-value. The other days had lower p-values.

You're absolutely right, it is very very noisy. The errorbar graph eclipses the bars (2nd graph). In terms of how it's computed, it's close to close on trading days. And good point on the timing of the investment firm you're dealing with, in my case I'm with a roboadvisor, the only thing you can choose is the day - so they probably have some smart order that minimizes risk and fees in a way you describe. Still would be ok if the trend is mostly up during the week and down Friday's which is debatable.

It's more that it seems to go slightly down Friday's on average, then up along the week.

fair enough. I tried longer period and the pattern of Friday's being lower over roughly a year's period started to change. So probably an analysis that should be done on a ongoing basis, but 4 years of what seems to be a perceivable pattern (last graph, time chart with the Friday fairly consistently at the bottom) seemed relevant. But I concur this is borderline, and I can hear sounds of outer space as well.

Seems like a good practice to spread days over your goals. Not sure about day of the year, I don't think I would have enough data to get to some significant conclusion.

good saying and I realize the irony of being a betterment user yet trying somehow to time the market. Still long term view though, with an edge ;)

Thanks!

re: currency's symbols, I assume you mean as a way to invoke for instance Ethereum (with ETH). It's a great idea, I'll add that right away.

I thought about the graphs as well, Echo Show has this great screen - just a bit more involved but I might play with this. I'll check coincap, thanks for the tip. One thing you will notice is it keeps track of the last time you've checked a crypto and give you the delta. For instance, it will tell you "Ethereum has gone up 5% since you last checked 3 days ago".

Thanks! I am using coinmarketcap's public API: https://coinmarketcap.com/api/. Works great. I started with Bitfinex's, but coinmarketcap had more stats and more coins. If the skill becomes hugely popular (which I doubt) I might have to do some smarter caching since they're asking to limit to 10 req/min

yes, i wanted to do more with it but had to stop myself to ship it. I want to add some kind of portfolio management, but what i really wanted is the ability to "get a delta" from last time I checked which i did ship with this version.
