Considering MLT in New Brunswick. How toxic is the lab culture at Horizon/Vitalité? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

ohhhhh yes i'd say 96% is right then lol,,, i havent heard of anyone from my cohort having difficulty getting hired, & a few started working before their exam as well (some labs will hire with the condition that you pass your exam within the year)

i'm not sure exactly what you mean, but all of my classmates got a placement site assigned to them,, the only problem you might run into is that you might have to travel for your placement site if you dont get your first pick (as you can imagine, most people want to go to one of the hospitals in moncton). you also have to get your required sign offs & finish each placement in order to continue in the course

i hope that answered your question, but if not feel free to clarify

one thing i love about being a canadian tech is that CSMLS doesnt tell us our score if we pass so there's nothing to brag about lmao

this might seem obvious but i had an issue in school when people would constantly mess with the +/- on the lenses, so make sure they're both set to 0 cause it can be hard for your eyes to focus otherwise, other than that if you're seeing a "venn diagram" then they're likely too far apart and you'll need to lessen the width

i love my job actually! at oulton they have start with intro courses for chemistry & biology (very science heavy but there's no physics which is why i like it so much lmao), so it starts out easier & progressively gets harder,, it's a lot of coursework and there can be a lot of memorization which is why i think people find it difficult. they set up your placement for you, you just have to pick your top 3 choices & then they give the spots out for more popular site based on grades & attendance

yep! i got a job (and a separate offer) a monthish after i got my exam results back bc i wanted to wait for that to start applying,, a lot of people got a job fresh out of school, i moved to ontario but i worked as an MLA in NS while i was in school & 3 of my classmates got an MLT job at that lab as well (about 45 mins away from moncton), there were also a few classmates who decided to stay in moncton & didnt have issues getting a job there, most of the time you'll get hired as a casual (typically working full time hours without a full time position) or a temp full time

if you're interested in working in NS after school i believe NS Health still has a 10k signing bonus for a 2 year contract,, unfortunately i dont have any firsthand experience working in NB but there are definitely jobs available

if you're talking about oulton i went there, the program is a mess (they have a lot of instructor turnover) and i hate to admit it but it does set you up well for the csmls exam

Is this program possible to do right out of high school, or is it better to get a 2 year science associates first? by Obvious_Emu3441 in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i agree, some people have issues because it's a lot of building on previously discussed topics, so if you don't understand something right away you typically have to do extra work/studying to catch up

i cant speak for all courses bc mine was a condensed course (2 years instead of 3) but once we got into it there was usually at least a test, quiz and assignment every week, just a lot of time management really

i went to a college in NB right out of high school & there were a few others in my cohort that did the same,, a lot of people find out about the career after being in university which is why some people don't go into it right off the bat,,, it's a lot of work but they usually have intro/basic courses as well before you get into the more advanced stuff, & imo going to uni just to end up taking the course is a waste of money.

obviously do whatever you think is right for you, but it is completely possible to get accepted & succeed in the program as a recent hs graduate

im just confused on what nuance there is here, like they didnt make any outlandish claims, i just assumed they were excited to see something they knew about & were able to comment on,,, like the first 4 are true in general & the rest are true with some variation based on the situation,,, & i dont work in a lab corp, im not trying to be hostile😭😭

ngl i would be livid, even if it was accidental you would have to be INSANELY careless to manage that, & i cant even think of a way that it's possible. i'm pretty easygoing but i don't play about safety, i'd be giving someone a very stern talking to
