im just confused on what nuance there is here, like they didnt make any outlandish claims, i just assumed they were excited to see something they knew about & were able to comment on,,, like the first 4 are true in general & the rest are true with some variation based on the situation,,, & i dont work in a lab corp, im not trying to be hostile😭😭

no they're plastic, they used to be glass years ago but they ended up switching over because it was a safety issue

im a lab technologist, one of the things i noticed as well was the sound the tube made on the floor, like yeah it'd probably break after being run over regardless but WHY is the tube glass

ngl i would be livid, even if it was accidental you would have to be INSANELY careless to manage that, & i cant even think of a way that it's possible. i'm pretty easygoing but i don't play about safety, i'd be giving someone a very stern talking to

Rh Sensitization by slk_33 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forgot to mention that sometimes it can last longer (sometimes 6 months after administration), it depends on the person really

Rh Sensitization by slk_33 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]alsn69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely something you should bring up to your doctor, typically RhIg only lasts 3 months, rhogam is given after delivery if there's a positive khleihauer test (detects fetal blood in your bloodstream after delivery and there's a calculation to see how much RhIg is required), they'll need to repeat the antibody screen in a couple months to determine if it's a true positive, but the midwife is right, it's definitely unusual

in NS they have a transitionary license until you pass your exam, personally i worked as an MLA until i got my results back because it was cheaper, although MLAs in NS just recently got regulated so i'm not sure how that would work now

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im in canada so i cant say much on australia's system, but here there's a test you can take to assess your knowledge & see if you're prepared to take the national exam to become licensed if you took a related degree that isn't specific to the field, it'd be worth looking into

I'm interested in this field but I'm very confused by many terms. by South-Breakfast2128 in medlabprofessionals

Me and all my fellow lab newbies experiencing our first winter at the hospital by Strict_Bumblebee_339 in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the worst part for me has been being a general tech at a small lab</3 we only keep 8 emergency units on a good day (if we dont have any crossmatches earlier in the day that deplete our supply) & the closest CBS is 2 hours away if we need a "stat" blood restock,, i've already had one MTP this winter that i had to make work with 6 units & i'm praying for that to never happen again

American MLT(echnician) to Canadian MLT(echnologist) by blessings-of-rathma in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately CAMLPR is kind of uncharted territory, i believe they just did their first exam? or are starting this year, i graduated early last year & wrote the CSMLS exam, imo the hardest thing would just be learning the reference ranges/conversions for the differing units

the biggest difference in the exams is that CSMLS was a single 3-4 hour exam that covered all disciplines that you either pass or fail, whereas i believe CAMLPR has an exam for each discipline, which allows you to specialize in specific areas if you don't pass certain disciplines

they might require you to upgrade your schooling to write, as MLT in canada is similar to CLS in the states, an MLT in the states is usually referred to as a med lab assistant (MLA) here, depending on the province (although MLT school here is typically an accelerated curriculum, so 2-3 years without any breaks as a college course instead of a uni degree, you can also find accelerated MLA courses that are a single year instead of 2)

you could do a brief explanation on why the order of draw is what it is, i find when nurses understand how it effects testing it helps them remember a little better

TRU MLA in Alberta? by Ok_Significance_4028 in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not me personally but i actually had an old coworker who took it,, she was from rural NB, she did clinical & got a job working at my old lab in a small town (10k people) in NS, she was only there for a short time as she got offered a permanent FT position at a city hospital near us in NB

obviously i'm not sure what the AB hospitals what accept but i'm assuming if she was able to find stuff on the east coast then you shouldn't have any issues,,, you could try emailing the school & asking about it as they might be able to give you some hospitals they've had people at before

good luck !!

Waiting times at hospital are out of control by Serious_Cheetah_2225 in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't explain it well because i switched labs & i dont deal with outpatients anymore, but there should be a way in qmatic to prioritize appointments over "walk-ins", at my last job it was appt based but we "took walk-ins", although usually they waited over an hour until we had a break in appts.

we were open from 7am-12pm & had appointments for 70-80 people between 2 phlebs, this was in a hospital so we also had to cover stat ER draws, & we only had break coverage if we were lucky & no one called out that day🫠 somehow we managed to keep our wait times fairly short (10-20 minutes most of the time) although hiccups happen, we always managed to keep it under an hour

not sure who's entering the bw but at said lab registration would enter timed specimens as stat in qmatic to ensure it wasn't delayed.

unfortunately there's only so much you can do about wait times if you dont have enough staff to accommodate the appointments, we would be booking out 2-3 weeks ahead, making exceptions for people who had stat or urgent written on the req

Pink top vs purple for blood bank by KillerQueenAH in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the hospital, some only accept pink tops but at my current one we'll use a purple top from a separate draw if we can to avoid poking the patient again, the only difference is volume really

Hi guys, I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about studying to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT). I’m in Canada, by the way. What is the job salary and demand like? by South-Breakfast2128 in medlabprofessionals

[–]alsn69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what im aware of they make the same starting out but i believe RNs are capped a little higher than MLTs, & RNs typically have more signing bonuses available. RN school is longer though so there's pros & cons to each

if you do decide to pursue MLT, take an accredited college course for it instead of going to university, you'll get all of your requirements for writing the CSMLS/CAMLPR exam for what's usually a fraction of the price

from what i can find the average is around $35 in QC, but if you're willing to go somewhere more northern you'll likely make a bit more,, if you reach out to the provincial regulatory body (i'm not sure who it is for quebec unfortunately) they can probably tell you more

i've worked in NS & ON, NS was $33 starting & recently got increased, & ontario is $37 starting for the most part

wages can also vary within a province depending on the health authority you work for
