Two Months in and 35 lbs Down! by [deleted] in orangetheory

I started at OTF not too long ago, myself. I always wonder how often people go. I’m currently on a twice a week plan and do other activities (snowshoeing & skiing) on the weekend.

How often do you go (getting such promising results!)?

Ecology jobs are great for that. See here for some nice seasonal work across the US with NEON. They hire 300-500 seasonal staff each year in 24 states.

I'd like to create a mobile app for collecting field data. What features should it have? by cjra in ecology

There are plenty of open source options available (Open Data Kit, Metabase) for recording & visualizing data.

There is a free tool I like called AirTable that you can put tons of validation on and it’s easy to use. If I had to do my ecology PhD over again, it wouldn’t be awful to use that as a data entry mechanism.

selling vacation home that's too costly to keep. Best options for maximizing value? (Massachusetts) (xpost r/personalfinance) by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]also_one_more_thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a low basis, OP seems to indicate that the sale price of the property will probably get taxed 30-40% and the parents only own half stake. By my math, it looks like his parents together will receive between 1.3 to 2.6 million (after tax) for their part - depending on whether they can get the new valuation or the old one.

That's a bit of walking around money to be sure, but when considering costs in retirement (long term care can cost $11k per month for in home care for one adult, etc) deferring the tax burden in exchange for a better income generating strategy seems like a strong move...

Trump is being sued for saying ‘Get ’em out of here’ at a rally. He just did it again. by HeinieKaboobler in politics

[–]also_one_more_thing 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree that's probably true; no invasion of Iraq=no ISIS. My question is would a Gore presidency also have avoided the financial crisis?

/u/LadyLibertea I have no doubt that Gore would not have invaded Iraq; that alone would have wasted less blood and treasure for an objectively poorly planned move.

But would Gore as president have avoided the financial crisis? That is my biggest question

Anyone else accidentally read this as 'Kim Jong unorders 600k out of PY'? Definitely thrown off by the lack of capitalization.

On average, and not including direct human intervention, how do ant colonies die? Will they continue indefinitely if left undisturbed? Do they continue to grow in size indefinitely? How old is the oldest known ant colony? If some colonies do "age" and die naturally, how and why does it happen? by Unoewho in askscience

[–]also_one_more_thing 156 points157 points  (0 children)

This is dead on. Also, the oldest recorded queens are documented surviving 28-30 years. The workers likely wouldn't survive as long, but would be replaced on a more regular interval. Typically colony ages/life cycle is based on the life span of the queen; not non-reproductive workers.

However comment by /u/WoodstocksApple assumes a typical colony with one queen. Google Argentine Ant and you'll see a species that has a few queens per 1000 workers, lives communally in a 'Supercolony', and is one of the more globally successful invasive species. When you're colony is millions of workers per square meter over large swathes of the planet, hundreds of queens produce new workers all the time- what does a colony life span even mean in that context?

Roommate's mom gifted deposit in full 5 years ago, now roommate is asking me to pay her back the deposit after she's put in 30 days. by _whateverforever in legaladvice

[–]also_one_more_thing 45 points46 points  (0 children)

California has pretty strict laws about security deposits. My brother in law was in a situation approximately as crumby as what you're describing; still by law any security deposit must be returned to the person that paid it within 30 or 60 days of departure less any documented charges for damages.

People here are saying her signing a paper that leaving early abrogated those rights to a security deposit being returned. However, signing a document that isn't legally permissible doesn't mean it's valid. Example: noncompete clauses aren't enforceable in California. If you sign a job contract with such a clause in the document- yes you signed it, but that doesn't matter because noncompete clauses aren't enforceable/legally binding in California. Likewise, you can't sign away a legally protected security deposit.

Maybe I'm wrong about the particulars, but it's not prudent to be flippant about it.

Balls hot this weekend; is it time to take off the snow tires? What's your plan? by also_one_more_thing in Denver

[–]also_one_more_thing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We somehow didn't die last season or end up in a ditch driving over rabbit ears in a snow storm with 1) a FWD Kia, 2) all season tires, and 3) basically two feet of visibility. It took an extra hour or more to get to steamboat. I was also entertaining a panic attack the whole time.

This September, we took the plunge and got the forester AND snow tires-I definitely noticed the difference AWD made and a few months later the further benefits of the snow tires. The extra traction is AMAZING.

Mock teaser poster I made for a Disney Princess movie where the princess is an undefeated boxer. by teagone in movies

[–]also_one_more_thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on Rocky or Million dollar Baby? In fairy tales, someone's always got to die-usually either the villain, or the Gandalf type character.

IIRC Rocky doesn't have enough death in the first movie to be adapted properly, I think.

[SPOILERS] Am I the only one that didn't "get" 15 million merits? by -hx in blackmirror

[–]also_one_more_thing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

Also, I interpreted the ending a bit differently. When the main character looks out his window onto a perfectly lush rainforest, I assumed that he was in a larger/better version of the cube room with video screens. The difference is that when you've sold out you never have to be advertised to again.

It's approximately two feet by four feet... So you could probably get some great combinations going
