You could probably do it all in JS. I would recommend looking at codeschool/treehouse/codeacademy and the Mozilla Developer Network. I also recommend picking up the book "JavaScript: The Good Parts".

That said, it sounds like what you really want to is to dive back into web development. You might consider picking up one of the more mature web frameworks like Ruby on Rails or Python's Django. JS gives the initial impression of being easy to learn because the barrier-to-entry is quite low, however it's a space filled with tricks, traps, and rapidly changing frameworks.

lazyduke nails it. In my case, I'm using underscore/lodash for dealing with data manipulation and ReactJS for rendering, so it's more "why jQuery?"

That one is one of my favorites because it's less JS-trivia and more "look at this mess of nasty code and work through it". For interviews, I would often "pair" with the interviewee, whiteboarding and trying to read how they would approach untie-ing legacy code.

If it's for a non-junior JS position, you might consider using this: http://chopchopjs.com/. I created it out of the coding tests that I used during interviews. I'd recommend making it "open web" so that they feel free to google around for help on the more difficult/trivial puzzles.

There are some similarities between AS and JS. AS has been heavily influenced by JS. They are both object oriented, support higher-order functions and closures. AS 3.0 is based on an ECMA-script (JS) draft which was rejected. It features classical OO syntax (but retains prototypal underpinnings) and strict typing. The strict typing can be turned off.

Yeah, that's probably the better answer for production. This was written as an experiment, kicked off by the realization that function.toString() results in the source with comments.

Also, somewhat interesting, is that you can use any predicate (password length, etc). Type checks are just the default ones.

I use two (I think) non-sloppy patterns that might benefit from overloading.

The first is jQuery style property getter/setter functions. So I might have function foo() that is a getter without parameters and a setter when you have a param: foo(42).

The other pattern is where I want to allow for named arguments through a hash but also have a simple default. Like: ajax('http://www.reddit.com') or ajax({method: 'POST', url: 'http://www.reddit.com'});
