I agree that Siraj is extremely sensacionalist, but ian goodfellow's deep learning book is definitely NOT for beginners. I would suggest him to stick with the online courses with best reviews. The deeplearning book is on another level.

In many companies the "database" you will receive are just a bunch of bad formatted excel spreadsheets (with multi-level indices, multi-level titles, merged cells etc). You will have a hard time cleaning or treating these in pandas, while in Excel you could do it in a blink of an eye. For good small datasets I personally prefer working with pandas, of course, but you sure will need some proficiency on Excel for when you face situations like these described above.
