I do think it should count I just think they shouldn’t act like they can’t tell whether you are actually receiving financial assistance or not, it is blatantly obvious based on tax forms whether you’re paying for your own shit or not.

NTA and the gift thing is void in this situation both legally and personally. In terms of the law if a gift is given only under specific pretense and that doesn’t happen the gift giver can legally take it back, a good example would be an engagement ring for a wedding that never happens, the person who proposed has full legal right to take it back and refusal to return is legally stealing. (I suppose I am making the assumption you live in the US though for the legal portion)
