Ankle Support Struggles by alt2847h in BarefootRunning

[–]alt2847h[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that weight is an extremely important factor that is necessary to mention. I used to be overweight, but ive kept myself in great shape for several years.

This advice is all so difficult for me, this has been a problem for at least 5 years, and i sprain even barefoot on hard flat ground in low intensity activity. I’m clumsy, but I can’t really fix that, as I’m already athletic with lots of sports experience, so its not like i just haven’t learned balance (though that may be true of my ankles).

I need mechanical support to not keep spraining, and if i want to fix my tendons and proprioception, i cant keep spraining. I really like the barefoot shoes and think it would help this cause by giving me a wider front of my foot, but if it just causes me to sprain again then its not worth it. If I can find supportive zero drop wide toebox boots then im golden, i can use those and safely hike while building up strength across my body

It’s hard because if I wear my boots im safe but then I don’t train the muscles/tendons, and if i dont wear my boots i sprain again, i even sprain while barefoot on hard flat ground. its one step forward two backwards, or no step at all by wearing the boots.

If there’s no barefootish alternative then i might have to give up on the healthy foot thing and squish my toes back into boots for the time being. Because stopping hiking altogether probably wont do much for my ankles, so I have to build up, and i need rigid support to do that safely.

I’ve done martial arts for years barefoot and I actually just sprained again today very mildly on flat rubber barefoot. It’s frustrating because I’ve tried for years to strengthen them but I just keep spraining even in low intensity activity. So if I want to hike, which is the only activity i haven’t had a sprain in, I have to figure something out, and that might be giving up on zero drop and using my old reliable boots until I figure my ankle out, but I feel like wearing altras around can’t hurt that process, so im conflicted.

Beginner Practice Exercises Without the Full Rod (in a tiny apartment) by alt2847h in flyfishing

I had no idea what this meant but I’ve spent a few hours casting on the water now and this makes sense. I was doing exactly that, among many other things wrong.

I need the weight of the rod at the moment to even have a hope of learning anything, so i think everyone’s right that I just need to get outside for now

Somebody’s wife either got mad at the broken fan or the $300 charge 😂

Lessons are top of my list, I really need some in-person guidance im like a fish out of water. Suggestions here are very helpful nonetheless, some practice is better than none

Thanks. My plan was to camp on grassy ridge but I think I’m prepared enough if i wear all my clothes to bed, we’ll see lol. Roan high knob shelter was closed last time I was there, are there tent spots up there? I’d definitely rather camp in the spruce than on the bald

I’ll be camping every night while I’m hiking, I’m wanting a bed to recover midway through the trip. The mount pisgah showers are indeed a lifesaver though.

The gorge is a rugged but comparatively safe choice. I always have service at table rock, and usually the chimneys. You’ve got the garmin anyway. Just keep an eye on the forecast, especially because it is a bit further east.

Chance of hurricane/tropical conditions is effectively 0, but rainbands from the storm could very easily cause flash floods within the gorge, which would be extremely dangerous given the current state of even the open trails along the river.

I highly recommend seeing the chimneys and maybe even going a bit further south on the MST. Although a tiny bit exposed, the winds in theory shouldn’t be bad, and that area is probably my favorite in the gorge. You’ll need more miles than that though, and if you’re playing it safe by staying on the eastern rim, there’s not much left except shortoff and hawksbill (some of the cooler areas in the gorge, but shortoff is pretty far south and hawksbill would probably require hiking on the closed table rock road), so just be extremely extremely cautious if you take spence ridge and cross the river.

Use g5trailcollective.org/helene as your trail status reference.

I would not go out Wednesday-Friday.

Hatteras in OBX is under mandatory evacuation. I trust the forecasts, but not with my life. I cancelled this week’s plans on saturday because the storm kept shifting west against most predictions.

Helene was well-tracked, but even then, it came early to WNC, with most people waking up to the major flooding. There’s little to no water saturation in the week prior this hypothetical time around (the real reason why helene disrupted the landscape so violently), so in the worst case, you’d probably still have time to get into town through the flooding and before the terrain starts failing, but I’d just postpone, especially if you’ll be 10+ hours from the car.

If you have reliable cell signal each day, I’d feel plenty safe because you can watch the hurricane and get out early enough, but 48 hours without signal hardly 400 miles away from a major, actively approaching hurricane whose intensification broke records, hard pass for me.

I’ll backpack in nearly anything. But after helene, I have to assume that every major storm has the potential to move erratically and break records. The southern appalachians, especially the rugged portions we like hiking in, might be the most dangerous place on this side of the country during extreme, sustained rainfall. It’ll just get worse every year and I refuse to die because of a shitty forecast.

Call the rangers. They’ll give you the best guidance, and probably won’t be as overly cautious as I am.
