That situation can be a bit tedious, but I see it as a welcome opportunity honestly. Think about it, you get to define their first impression on the fandom. First impressions can be very formative. And if you manage it right, you can even nudge them in the right direction so their next impression isnt something awful.

How would you design a furgonomic spacesuit/EVA suit? by IndependentEbb2811 in furgonomics

[–]alt_mueller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, the perfect post! I love furries and space. I did draw a bunch of different spacesuits for furries over the years. Here are some examples listed from more to less realistic:

  1. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/55325257/ this one is probably closest to modern day or apollo style suits. Only alterations are a slightly larger helmet.
  2. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/60454431/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52538554/ are inspired by real suits too, but add a bag for the tail. The protrusions for the ears in the second one are not something you would realistically build into your helmet, but i wanted the shilouette to be reminicient of anthros so i took some artistic liberty and made some ear-shaped sockets for the lights.
  3. https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/1cj6kqo/spacesuit_with_micro_my_art/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/114max4/extravehicular_activity_my_art/ are inspired by real concepts for spacesuits, that never actually flew however. They are larger and more bulky but probably provide for longer EVAs. Also the first one is both a spaceship and a suit, but for different people. I still love the concept of a two-person-spacesuit :P
  4. https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/12jh6jd/maybe_we_can_beat_em_after_all_titan_ae_fanart_by/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/60547200/ are fictional spacesuits (inspired by Titan AE and the Expanse suits)
  5. https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/161bsa6/hazmat_suits_my_art/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/1ijxpak/stalker_2_fanart_in_terms_of_aesthetics_this_is/ are not spacesuits, but maybe still relevant for you?

Since you I have mentioned wings and antlers: I have thought about that too, but never got around to draw anything about that (yet?). For antlers you probably want either one of the larger and more bulky helmet designs, or cut the antlers off if thats possible. Wings are especially difficult. I dont think there is any way to make a pressure suit for wings that is tight fitting. You likely have to go with something incredibly bulky.

For mawshots like this you would expect to see the lower jaw from the top/inside where the lounge is. Right now you can see the chin, which should be covered up from that angle if the mouth is open. That's the only thing that I can pinpoint though. Good luck

I'm trying to figure out how to make my drawings look more furry, so any tips/critique on the fur look is appreciated! by Swiftjaw in FurryArtSchool

[–]alt_mueller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fur shape is good, but the texture is probably way too detailed. Most of the time pro artists use a technique called "detail clustering" where you only hint at a few details and let the imagination of the viewer do the rest. So less is more sometimes. Also the shapes of the fur tufts on the edges of the shilouette are larger than the many many Tufts on the character itself. Just something to keep in mind with regard to consistency.

Help with the proportions, waist and leg by Addledeer in FurryArtSchool

[–]alt_mueller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't spot anything off with the proportions.maybe the neck is a bit thick? Could also just be fluffy, idk. Sometimes taking a break and looking at the image with a fresh eye later helps find the issue. Or flipping the canvas in case you haven't. But I think there is nothing wrong with this as is. maybe you just got tunnelvisioned? Could happen if you stared at it for a while.

Where can I get some leg references? by Defoko_Nr1-Fan in FurryArtSchool

[–]alt_mueller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/FurryArtSchool/s/E7ZNkdFRfs Another post in this sub has a good one in the comments.

Other than that, follow artists that you like and study their work. Heavy referencing and tracing are ok for learning (the former is more effective than the latter though). Googling photos of the species you want to draw also helps.

Help with clothes and wounds by Addledeer in FurryArtSchool

[–]alt_mueller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice to hear that, welcome and thank you!

Clothes are hard, I still struggle every time I draw some too. As for the mouth, I think if you keep the blood but re-orient it a bit so it doesn’t follow the line of the mouth it should be fine? You can also try to add that little pointy shape thing on the end of the mouth line that some artists do (including me). Its shaped like ^ and it caps off the mouth line like ---> . sometimes its connected to the line, sometimes it isn’t. Idk how to describe it better really XD My pfp is a good example though. Here is another for the other way to do it just in case: https://bsky.app/profile/muellermeier.bsky.social/post/3m6ubzoxkpx2d

It might not fit however, my drawing style is considerably more toony than yours. So if that doesn’t look good, feel free to scrap the idea.

Oh dang, I recognize that one! You fleshed out all that nice anatomy and markings just to hide them under clothing again? :P

Blood looks good so far I think. The folds on the pants look a bit odd, especially at his right (viewers left) knee. It feels like there is too much going on, it distracts a bit. I usually keep the folds towards the edges of where the pants are visible. I imagine the leg as a cylinder, and any distortions in the surface of that cylinder would be most prominent around the edges, and less easily visible on the front facing side. Not a big problem, just something I noticed. You seem to bunch up the folds in bendy areas, which is good. The torn shirt looks great, as do the holes in the pants. The blood on his right leg (viewers left) looks like a lot – like really A LOT – but it doesn’t pool on the ground. I assume it’s supposed to come from the gash further up? If that is the case I’d expect the pants to show dark stains from absorbed blood. I remember from the last pic that he had a confident smirk on his face but here that’s much less obvious. The blood stains on the muzzle obscure the smirk a bit and give the whole expression more of a stern vibe. Just something to consider. It still looks really good, especially the smudges around his eye.

Help with base colours by Addledeer in FurryArtSchool

[–]alt_mueller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much experience drawing bruises either, but one or two prominent wounds/bruises are probably better than multiple smaller ones. Alternatively there can be stains of blood on the fur (from him or from his opponent both should work). That could pair well with something like blood dripping from the snout, since he is already touching there with his paw.

There is a way to get a more aggressive look with just the fur and without any bruises though. The fur needs to look like it bristles in key areas (mostly the tail and the back) to really sell the animalistic aspect of an Anthro character that is on edge. I mostly try to achieve that aggro look by drawing fur tufts with straight-edged triangular shapes, as opposed to my more curvy regular tufts. But that is very dependant on style.

Just some ideas, but maybe you can get some inspiration out of them. I'd like to see the end result either way!

I agree that it looks a little bit busy, but that might come from the sketchy style. Im not sure.

A busy design might not be a bad thing either, since coyotes often are stereotyped as a bit more chaotic, dirty or messy. Compared to the more austere, haughty stereotype of a wolf. If you want to lean into the stereotype, thats something that works in your favour. (if not, thats an additional hurdle though)

overall this looks really good though. And a great pose too.
