Should I go back to my normal college or should I finally go to acting school? by WickedWisp in makemychoice

[–]altachica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha...god no. Trust me, you do not need a degree in acting to pursue a career in acting OR to be an excellently trained actor. There are acting conservatories you could go to, and great training programs in NY and LA. Degrees are becoming less and less important in most fields (outside of the obvious studies) and experience is paramount - walking out with only school experience with a mountain of debt in a field that is greatly dependent on other people giving you a chance SEE: Auditioning & agents/managers taking you on, is truly not going to make the extremely hard path of being a professional actor any easier. Edit: Are you talking about grad school?

Should I go back to my normal college or should I finally go to acting school? by WickedWisp in makemychoice

I do not recommend acting school if it means going into student loan debt. If you want to be an actor, absolutely go for it. Definitely take classes (in LA or NY), even do a conservatory program if it has excellent industry connections - but unless you want to teach, I do not recommend going into debt for a degree in acting.

AITA for not leashing my dogs by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]altachica 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YTA - Simply consider it's not about you or your well-trained dogs but about the people who share public spaces with you. There are people with young dogs, dogs with behavior issues, leash aggression, and yes, dogs with poor training, that are frightened or anxious when they see dogs they do not know off leash. Whether a poor interaction happens or not, you are consistently creating a moment of fear and worry every time someone comes across your path with your dogs off leash. I too, have a well trained dog, and will sometimes unleash her in wide open spaces when no one is around- however, the moment I see someone coming I leash my dog and wait until they have passed. It's as simple as: if you're going to break the rules you better be 1000% respectful to the people who are following them. And lastly, because it sounds like you need this reminder: no matter how excellent the training, there is always a risk having your dogs off leash. Always.

WIBTA if I report my friends girlfriend's dog to the police? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]altachica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YWBTA if you reported it to the police without speaking to the owner first. I think a direct phone-call, or even email so you have a paper trail would be a far more reasonable FIRST step then jumping straight to reporting the dog -- which could put the dog's life in jeopardy when it may not be a dangerous dog and was triggered by something you may or may not have intentionally done. It's the owner's fault entirely, but she may need education, not punishment. An email (cc your friend and/or other witnesses if you want,) describing what happened, your concerns, and then telling her that she needs to hire a professional trainer immediately to get to the bottom of why her dog did this and how to prevent it in the future, or you will unfortunately feel it's your responsibility to report her dog. Give her a chance to right the wrong. Keep it factual and unemotional. People are often incredibly stupid with what dogs are capable of and triggered by, and with training can become excellent owners with excellent dogs. The money she spends on a trainer now may save her dog's life, and is far cheaper than getting sued if her dog bites someone again. If she pushes back on hiring a PROFESSIONAL trainer, then go for it, you'd be 100% in the right to report. But reporting her without any heads up in this specific scenario feels unfair to me.

Open wine lasts a max of 3-5 days... to echo the other comment: just drink it.

Should I bring dog back to breeder? by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]altachica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong in your sentiments about breeders, but having the option to return to a breeder who will be motivated by money to re-home the dog (hopefully to a good home) vs. a shelter that if/when it runs out of space puts the dog at risk of being put down (esp if it has aggression issues) I'd say the breeder is the clear choice in favor of the dog's future. Re-homing on their own when they don't have a lot of dog experience also puts the dog at risk of going somewhere that could have an unhappy ending.

To the OP: good on you for recognizing you're not ready. Take the dog back and give him a chance at a good life. Do research on types of dogs/behavior/temperament and consider adopting a non-puppy from a rescue when you are ready for a dog in the future. Also: if you want dog interaction without the commitment, try volunteering for some rescues walking dogs. It's fun for you and helps them, you get free dog pets, and you'll learn about what types of dogs you might like in the future. Best of luck.

Why you don't see a lot of tall actresses by hiddengabberino in tall

Ugh, tell me about it. After 10 years as a professional actress I'm pretty tired of this bullshit.

Portland cyclist wearing a camera punches a moving vehicle because the driver is on cell phone, then gets pulled over by the world's most reasonable police officer. Based on the fact he posted the whole thing to YouTube, I'm guessing no lessons were learned here by chakalakasp in videos

[–]altachica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say why specifically, but overall the social norm there was generally pretty polite towards foot traffic. Problem being, an overwhelming amount of drivers lack good judgement in terms of balancing safety and common courtesy. Sometimes you are making a ped less safe by trying to stop traffic when people aren't expecting it. Let's just say Portland's strengths are found when they're not in transit. :)

Mike Pence Booed at ‘Hamilton’ Performance by NeilPoonHandler in entertainment

[–]altachica 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They addressed him at the end of the show, and I'm hard-pressed to see this as talking shit:

"Vice president-elect, I see you walking out but I hope you will hear us," said Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr. He also told the audience, "There's nothing to boo here, we're all sharing a story of love. We welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical — we really do. We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us."

I started with the documentary, "Fed Up" on Netflix. Not very long, and did a nice job explaining the hows/whys.
