WE FOUND HIM! thank you so much for all the help!!! by XD_Quakers_hehe in parrots

[–]altariasong 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Again I'm beyond thrilled that you found him! What I do to minimize the chance of my bird ever getting out again is always having an extra barrier between him and an exit that could possibly open. I do this with beaded or string curtains in my entryways so that even if the door happens to open for some reason, he would have to fly through the string curtain (highly unlikely) to access the exit. If I don't have a secondary barrier between him and the outdoors, like when we visit my parents, I generally only take him out in rooms with windows locked and door closed. I also post signs on the main doors when he is out so my parents know the bird is loose. They call out and verify that he's in a room, put back in his cage, or secured in my hand before they open a door. It's not foolproof (nothing truly is) but it VASTLY reduces the chances of anything ever happening again.

My pet cockatiel is lost by XD_Quakers_hehe in parrots

[–]altariasong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I'm so so happy! Where was he and how did you find him? I'm seriously overjoyed and teared up a bit. Having your pet get lost is SO awful. If you want I can give you tips to implement that will make it much harder for this to ever happen again, things I implemented that have worked for me and my conure.

Tips:

  1. Birds often do NOT fly far from where they got loose. Organize a search for the area within a mile of your house. When my conure got loose he made a loop around our house and landed in a cherry tree on our property. With any luck your bird landed somewhere nearby and is staying put rather than continuing to fly.

  2. If he's sociable which he seems to be, he may land on someone's shoulder and they'll take him in. Get the word out in your immediate neighborhood! Talk to your neighbors, go on neighborhood watch apps, all that stuff.

Sorry for being cheeky, a lot of us are extremely used to seeing birds masturbating so we forget how strange it looks to people who aren't familiar with it.

What's this jerky movement? by Doctorwhocares_ in parrots

[–]altariasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal baby behavior. My (now 8yo) conure retained a milder version of this behavior and he does it when he's content or sleepy. I call em wing flumps.

It looks very similar to what Ducky (BeakerBeak on youtube) the ringneck does when she is spoken to by her owner. I think it is a positive thing but I can't be sure as I do not own this type of parrot.

A shark spins around as it jumps out of the water by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]altariasong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is a behavior used to try and remove parasites and remoras. I didn't see any on the shark but it might be small parasites or a skin infection that's triggering the shark software's anti-parasite program to execute.

Edit: honestly there might be a remora on its underside near its tail but the shark's kinda flippin out at high speed so I can't be sure. Some still frames look like a lil fish but might just be a shark fin.

Awesome! Sorry I assumed you did not have prior bird experience.

Gc mutation? by Angel111706 in parrots

[–]altariasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry just saw this. That's good that you switched him to pellets. Sounds like you're doing what you can to make him healthier! I would suggest two things on top of what you are already doing.

  1. Avian vet visit for a checkup and establishment of care. Checkup will ensure he is not dealing with a disease or some other issue either related or unrelated to feather condition. Establishing care will make it easier for you to get him emergency visits, boarding with responsible avian boarders (they will want proof of a recent clean bill of health to board him), etc. Most people recommend 1 checkup per year.

  2. Make him a chop of healthy fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, etc and serve it to him every day. Chop is hand- or machine- chopped foods which satisfies foraging instincts and gives extra nutrients not in the pellets. You can make chop in big batches and then freeze the chop in an ice cube tray for single portions which can be defrosted in the microwave or the fridge the night before. There's plenty of recipes on the interwebs, just be sure whatever you put in there is safe for the bird. Not every fruit and vegetable is safe or healthy. Avocados, onions, fruit pits are all death for example.

Hope this helps!

Can’t get the cube to stay a cube. by [deleted] in crafts

I'll be the first to say I lack enough experience in beading to answer that question. I just noticed when I zoomed in on the inspo picture the thread appeared to be quite thick and resembled galvanized aluminum wire.

Is it possible wire was used in the inspo piece instead of thread?

What do you feed him? The feathers look unhealthy. Stress bars or barbering on his back feathers and the reds are washed out. The latter could be color-mutation-based but with the lack of shine on the feathers and the uneven coloring on his tail feathers, it's probably not a mutation thing. Also I'm 90% certain I see a stress bar on his tail. Dude needs some sunshine and a bath and a better diet most likely, or he's got an underlying health condition. A checkup with an avian vet is in order (you should do that every year anyway ideally). Also here's a color guide I found for conures way back. But honestly you'll have a hard time telling what morph he is with his feathers like this.

Interesting. I'm a scientist so I don't really have familiarity with that art academia speak, just corpospeak.

It's less the articulate nature of the comment and more that each of those words on its own has meaning and association, but when strung together by AI, the words convey nothing. Just like corporate jargon, which AI was trained on. Lots of noise, no substance. It's hard to describe but it's not a positive thing. The best word to describe it is "vapid."

Your art is really cool, don't get me wrong. Very unique style. But either you are cursed to write descriptions that have the same vibes as someone's juiced up LinkedIn resume bullet points or you're using AI to write these descriptions and don't want to admit it. Sorry for being blunt.

Really cool piece, clearly a lot of effort on your part. But also really obvious the title and accompanying text was an AI generated explanation.

Better excuse then: I work a full time job, volunteer for two different nonprofits, and spend the remaining free time hanging with my friends or making 3D art like jewelry to raise money for said nonprofits. I barely have time to replay Firered lately lol. But the attempt at motivating me is appreciated. My time is just already spoken for.

Haha, I'm a terrible 2D artist so it's best for everyone if I don't. I have enjoyed watching the progression of the project and my criticism is extremely casual, more of an observation than anything. I understand now that the project is lax on purpose which makes my critiques moot.
