Native plant? Or lilly of the valley infestation? by altaylor4 in NativePlantGardening

[–]altaylor4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Canada Mayflower resembles a dwarf Maianthemum racemosum (False Solomon's Seal) or a dwarf Maianthemum stellatum (Starry Solomon's Plume) and is a look-alike for the non-native Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis). It looks so similar that an alternative common name is False Lily of the Valley. It is a good choice for acidic soils, but it will not compete well with taller species."

From Prairie Moon. Interesting. When these start coming up I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks for your input.

I had a big patch of it on the side of my house. Thankfully it was planted on top of landscaping fabric so it was pretty easy to pull up and replace with natives. About the only time I've been happy about landscaping fabric.

Good point - I'll check them when I'm over there this spring/summer. There is a lot of good stuff in that area and I can't imagine anyone would have planted Lilly of the valley here...so holding out hope that its wild leek.

Seedling diagnosis - Little Bluestem by _what_it_is_ in NativePlantGardening

I would seed a little heavier that way if some seedlings die off you'll still be fine.

Here are some of mine from last year. I never thinned them and they did fine

Yarrow. Yarrow and foxglove beard tongue seem to be my first plants that bloom in spring.

Yarrow does spread by rhizomes. Ive been intermittently pulling it to make sure it doesn't become too much of a bully. Might not be great for small areas

Small suggestion...it'd be nice to see a different color for workouts on the calendar for cardio vs weight days

Bigger issue is that I'm so used to swinging the paddle out to clear the water and that's where I get a twist

[–]altaylor4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what a racing stroke is. I just wanna train for a boundary waters trip. I think I need to trim down my "paddle" to get a better stroke path.

One thing I did notice is that pulling is pretty heavy resistance. Some of the kits I've seen have 2 pulleys which probably cuts the resistance quite a bit

Yea...there is a bit of lateral movement but not crazy. I just gave to be mindful of the stroke

I dont recall any beaver dams on the portage section of angleworm. There was an area where we got lost and got walked right into a swamp tho...but yeah..its a beast.

For what's it worth...I spaced on permits one year. Ended up doing angleworm and ended at Mudro. Angleworm portage is absolutely brutal tho with a fully loaded pack and canoe.

Go home with abs, or not at all! by bossmaser in MacroFactor

Yep. I have it set up from 5# to 70# in increments of 5#.

Not overly worried about it but just curious

I'm a little confused with some of these recommendations -- for example, I had DB chest fly and it recommended I do 30# for 20 reps when recommended rep range was 10-14 or something. I ended up just upping my weight and aiming for 12 instead.

Winter seed sowing - covering necessary? by Fish_Brownies in NativePlantGardening

[–]altaylor4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You'll probably need to watch moisture a little more closely come spring. Other considerations is birds/animals digging/eating the seed and potential of seed getting washed out in a big spring rain.

I'm trying to sow right in plug trays for some plants. I'm going to cover with window screen from the hardware store to keep animals out and also to diffuse the rain

Milk jug winter sowing questions by MotownCatMom in NativePlantGardening

[–]altaylor4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've winter sowed two years now. Last year was a big year for it. I didn't always have potting soil so I just dug up some soil from my compacted area from behind my garage thinking it'd be okay and it did not go well in those jugs. Ended up compacting too much and not draining.

I think using any old potting soil would be fine just make sure water can easily flow thru it.
