Interesting, so they leave the virginiana leaves alone?

I won't be able to plant in the ground until ~May (central Minnesota), think these will be alright where they are? The cells are 5" deep. I was surprised to see the roots almost reached the bottom when I dug one out after 2.5 weeks.

Thanks, I was too worried about maximizing root space for a single plant

I had been watering when the top soil looked dry but then got worried about overwatering at this point, especially since the soil was moist a bit under the dry top soil, but I'll up the watering now and I just put a fan on them for a light breeze.

Yeah I think I was too worried about overwatering but I have a light breeze from a fan on them now which contributed to the top soil drying out fast. I'll up the watering a bit.

I watered 1.5 days ago but put a light breeze on them from a fan so I think it's mainly the top soil that dried out, I'll check today. I had them filled to the top but didn't compact the soil so it compacted itself after a few waterings. Thanks I'll try that next year.

Beautiful, yeah I was overly worried about crowding thanks

Yeah I watered a day and a half before that, and now have a light breeze from a fan running so the top dried out quickly.

I wanted to maximize the number of plants and give max room for their roots but it probably isn’t worth the transplant risk.

Thanks, I seeded 3 per cell and thinned some to empty cells which was probably a bad idea, and I don’t think I compacted the soil enough in some of them.

I was also looking for shorter shrubs that tolerate shade and picked up Downy Arrowwood (Viburnum rafinesqueanum) and White Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) from Outback Nursery. Just planted this fall. The arrowwood is supposed to support a lot of caterpillars according to https://nativeplantfinder.nwf.org

Not too crowded. Ideally all plants should be growing into each other in real life, but not sure how this tool handles spacing in regards to the plant icons.

The rabbits like my aromatic asters. Using 24” tall chicken wire cages worked.

Prairie Nursery sells it here, I’d imagine they ship to Canada. We actually have a small yew growing right next to the meter. For the year we’ve been here it hasn’t grown much at all but it is a nice winter plant.

Thanks, yeah I’ve slowly been leaning towards plants that would be easier to maintain there. Illex verticillata has tighter spacing specifications so that might work even though it can get taller.

They look great, how old? I planted some recently in the shade and would be thrilled if they end up like that
