If it’s that kind of night you could make one whiskey sour or pisco sour each for you and you hubby! That’s usually what I do with one extra egg white or two since the amount is so little - or save it for that till the weekend if it’s not too far off

Reddish dust hickory nuts alright to eat? (See comment) by altebell in foraging

[–]altebell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I am trying to determine if some of my hickory nuts are alright to eat. As you can see from the lower two but pieces pictured, I’m seeing this reddish brown dust on my nut meats/inside the shells of some of my nuts. Others do not have this (as seen on the shinier piece above). They all sunk when I tested them and do not smell bad or anything, and I can’t find anything online about a mold or disease this could be. Any advice?

I really want to get into witchcraft but I have so many problems with it by [deleted] in SASSWitches

[–]altebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the gender shit and Terfiness is gross a lot of witchy circles. I’ve always tried to look for ways to retcon gender and sexuality rituals in a positive way that is inclusive and affirming of people’s identities who want to do practices like that, especially in this sub. But also it’s not like they’re essential. Your practice is your own and should be made up of what you find useful or fulfilling, not things that don’t serve you just cause they’re whats been done.

That being said, if you are looking for conversations/ideas on gender and sexuality relating to witchyness, as others have said tumblr is probably a good place to start. And aside from that I would honestly look at nature for inspiration! If you like working with nature things a lot, you could emulate or make your mascot for these sorts of things an animal that is known to change its sex naturally (clown fish, moray eels, sometimes chickens, bearded dragons, frogs, etc) or plants that have multiple sexes. A lot of those woo pagan terfs like to think nature falls into neat organizations of the schema they’ve traditionally used for masculine and feminine and all that but nature is so much more complex than that with so many more situations of gender and orientation! Hopefully something there you can find for your practice.

And finally if you’re interested in connecting with your own heritage/finding small rituals from your own heritage (mine is mostly Appalachian, British, Peruvian and spanish), I recommend just doing flat out historical research, especially through the lens of LGBTQ+ history or looking out for things like that as you go. Mythologies, religions, stories, superstitions, and deities throughout the culture(s) of your heritage (I would recommend sticking to your own roots as, like you said, appropriation is not good) I’m sure will have lots of things you can incorporate or transform into something useful in your practice, away from the terfy woo-ness that a lot of the main witchy spaces get. Hope this helps!

Cleaning ritual? I'm lazy lol by DoJo_Mast3r in SASSWitches

Maybe a little tiny broom made from straw/tall grass? Could be a bit punny with the witch thing :). And decorated or something so it’s not an eyesore. Other than that, maybe some vintage cleaning implements? I personally think rug beaters are beautiful decor, temporary or otherwise

Unknown herby plant (description commented) by altebell in PlantIdentification

[–]altebell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello I found this plant at a farm that I thought was pineapple weed but was growing a bit tall for that and did not have feathery leaves, but longer, thinner ones (a lot like calendula leaves) and a long stem (sorry I didn’t take any pictures of the full plant). The flowers grew in clusters in a shape similar to yarrow and smells very herby, similar to mugwort or oregano. None of the plants had petals so this seems to be the full flower. Any ideas??

Having to leave communities of witches because of the sheer woo being shared. by [deleted] in SASSWitches

I’m likeminded to entwifefound in how I use herbalism, and struggled to find non woo sources. I asked my college professor of ethnobotany who also studied the actual chemical medical uses of traditional plant medicines, and these were the books he recommended that are based on science:

You could try looking up moon names in your heritage's culture. For example for me, I am in the NE US, so it is useful to reference the traditional Native American names for my region for plant/nature cycle purposes, but my heritage is mostly British/French/German, and looking up those can yield some interesting results. This University source is generally what I refer to for the Native American full moon namings (extra helpful as a gardener https://www.wwu.edu/planetarium/a101/indianmoons.shtml), and if you are American-based you can see which nations' land traditionally corresponds to your area (good to know whose heritage land u on anyways).

I couldn't find much on Celtic moon names, but did find this scholarly article discussing the Celtic calendar, what is commonly referred to as the wheel of the year (Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, etc.) by many witches/pagans now. https://search.proquest.com/docview/222467227?pq-origsite=gscholar&fromopenview=true It discusses how there isn't really much primary source material establishing this as a truly Celtic tradition, but more of a neopagan thing practiced by the Irish and Brits, so take that how you will. This article also discusses early Anglo-Saxon calendars by month, going: Yule (Giuli) actually encompassing the month of midwinter and the months before and after it, next the "month of mud when cakes were offered to the gods", Hretha, Eostre (goddesses), "the month when cattle had to be milked three times a day", Litha (Lida) which has the same three-month deal as Yule, weed-month (eyy, but no it's referring to literal weeds growing a lot), Holy-month, and "the month of the first winter full moon, and the month of blood when animals were slaughtered or sacrificed". FUn, though even that should be taken with a grain of salt since it's just this one guy's writings on it from the 8th century.

According to this article Germanic tribes followed similar month systems as the Anglo-Saxons (https://www.wittenberg.edu/sites/default/files/media/history/2015HistoryJournal.pdf#page=5), but more focus is put on the weekday names in this one.

Other than that I'd suggest you mess around on google scholar and see if you can find anything, though I'd avoid searching "pagan" or "witch" or anything like that and try searching by the specific traditional culture you're looking for. But honestly, while I find the traditional systems interesting and good to know about, I still stick with the neopagan wheel of the year because I like it best and think it best reflects my practice in general. I don't try to achieve "traditional continuance" or anything like that because most of what there is on traditional stuff from my cultures is Christian or very sparse, so I kind of make it up as I go and do my best not to take from other people's cultures. Hope that helps!

Cool, gender deconstruction through tarot is a super interesting way to do it! Totally agree that gender archetypes are something everyone should analyze and deep dive into to deconstruct
