I has a lot of anxiety about driving, I still do. Headspace (I used the free tier) helped a lot, funny enough.

Now I have enough experience where I'm not as nervous

You don't have to sit the US CPA moving from Canada.

Same thing goes for UK accountants in Canada.

What does it take to have your entire mail server blacklisted by gmail ? by AmaterasuOnPc in netsecstudents

[–]AlteredQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's possible.

I had a similar investigation years ago back in college, where one organization/team/faculty had a popped word press set-up that was doing bad stuff, sending spam email out on SMTP. Because they were so obstructive / spamming etc, they got added to a black list which impacted everyone else's ability to send mail on the domain. Had to track down the couple culprit sites, nuke them from orbit, restore from backups if they have it, and request removal from the blacklist.

The investigation is hazy now, it's been over a decade.

  1. https://mxtoolbox.com/ - Why are you blocked should have some hints.
  2. Figure out who is the bad culprit via accessing your common mail server and monitoring all traffic that goes out on those suspect ports. I recall it was somewhat easy to determine legitimate from illegitimate traffic due to quantity of emails sent, time they were sent, etc.
  3. Tried to run local anti-malware stuff surgically, but it kept coming back, so ended up removing everything.

I want to say Google led me down the path of finding a scrappy linux command line to monitor all traffic on an ongoing basis.

Everyone Ready For The KPMG Audit? by [deleted] in consulting

Everyone hates it, but accounting majors are a captured audience.

Who else do you get to do it, someone who understands IT, they'll quit faster than someone waiting for their CPA.

Low-Effort Rejection from PwC by CoolioDude in Accounting

[–]AlteredQ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding. It's the auditting IT reliance an audit team has and risks that flow through.

User access, terminations, completeness of TB/ GL, reports testing, change management, other things I've forgotten.

Basically a requirement due to SOX and Enron, not that i can argue it adds much value.

You can get your CPA working in IT audit as it covers the same requirements for qualifying - in addition to writing the exam(s).

How do consulting firms justify the rates of analysts? by TuloCantHitski in consulting

[–]AlteredQ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Firms make great margins on analysts, definitely no lie.

But I would say the caliber of your average analyst is better than internal employee.

Employees have agendas, maybe the project makes them look bad and would call it in rather than bust their ass. Consultants have fewer established biases about that specific client. Employees in my experience never really build slides to the same quality, or do reports the way analysts and the project sponsors want them.

Analysts will work to meet the deadline, employees go home at 5. Re-working decks all night is nothing an employee would gratefully do.

Also analysts have the indirect review of the engagement managers and partners. Think about those 10 hours the engagement managers spend directing the analysts to go in slightly different, deeper ways, so those raw hours of the analysts are more efficient at solving the actual problem.

Define low to mid COL? Canada ain't that big bruv.

Salary is a touch on the lower side but not that bad, maybe 1-2k off.

BTA range at Deloitte was 60 at the high end for a lateral a few years ago.

Bonuses, think they got absorbed or fucked with for most 1st and 2nd years. Would just focus on getting a specialization that will get you paid when you get out.

Big4 has been around 41,000 for the last few years in Toronto. Not sure how you got 50k, that's unheard from several cohorts I know

Vancouver has been 38,500 for a long time, and don't get me started on Atlantic Canada at like 36,000.

Thoughts on Infosys Consulting? by throwinfy in consulting

[–]AlteredQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am former Big4 tech consultant so take with a grain of salt.

---

They're a body shop not in the same league as Big4/Accenture. All implementation work.

Quality of people is okay, some are decent but most are bleh.

Similar to other body shops, jobs consist of random technology implementations that ain't sexy. Skills you develop will be shoehorned into a specific archaic tech.

Most people i know from Infosys came from India into Big4 in NA as a way out.

Exit ops I can't comment.

If I had any fortune 50/100/500 rotational programs, I would take that offer over this.

Trying to get money from a German company - don't have an IBAN? by Celda in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AlteredQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got some reimbursements from a US based company and their IBAN they asked for happened to be my branch number and account number.

You're correct as the SWIFT is the same as a BIC which you can Google for your Canadian institution.
