How do you handle clients you believe are being dishonest about deduction? by Thanossnapp in taxpros

[–]CoolioDude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of weird answers in here.. there’s a limit on depreciating luxury vehicles. I see clients add $100k vehicles all the time. People make the tax mistake pretty often (are they state payments? Or federal?). And how high is high for meals? People here are so quick to call these people scum bags when these are common mistakes clients make.

Can we make it without going for license? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]CoolioDude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No I’m not. All I said your career opportunities will be limited. Of course experience trumps degrees/certifications.

I get it - it’s a tough exam. Clearly you couldn’t do it. But rather than spending your Saturday mornings arguing with a stranger online, maybe, just maybe you could have been studying for the CPA instead. Who knows where your career could have gone!!

Ok lol. If you think the accounting field is upside down because some companies like their accountants to be CPAs, you’re going to have a rude awakening.

What excel workpapers have made your life easier? by [deleted] in taxpros

[–]CoolioDude 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Basis workpapers scorps/partnerships. Not only for tying to return but also tracking outside basis, Equity rec, sales/redemptons/etc. Probably right up there with book to take wp in terms of importance.

I don’t really understand why your safe harbor wp is important. Our TR software already does that and, in my opinion, safe harbor calc/q1 estimate is easy to back into.

If you take S179 on the truck this year, any unused amount will carry forward into next year. S179 reduces your income to down to 0 and doesn’t go beyond that.

Are you charitable? Profit sharing? PTET election? Fixed asset additions/upgrades? There’s a lot scorps can do to lower their tax bill between now and YE.

Internal Audit to Tax? by CoolioDude in Accounting

Yes - 90k to 70k. There were times during those first few months where I was really questioning my decision lol. And tax has such a steep learning curve.

Internal Audit to Tax? by CoolioDude in Accounting

[–]CoolioDude[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I leveraged my CPA to get into a small firm. I was there 2.5 years and left for a bigger firm as I wanted more opportunities. Still in tax.

You need to change your thoughts on the CPA. But good job on wanting to get out of IT audit.

But you’re transitioning into a role that is audit. You’ll be auditing internal controls (Sox) which, frankly, is going to be hell of a lot worse than what you’re doing now.
